Take a minute to thank The Greatest Generation

Baz, that's on hell of a family heirloom! Yes, the original "never forget" for the USA...attacked on our own territory.

Dad had just turned 21 that year. He enlisted in '39 at 19 and retired in '59 after a 20 year stint. That attack, as you said, was really shocking to the entire world, needless to say. Our country really pulled together during that war.

Yes. It is important to remember what happens when egos and ambitions replace ethics and norms of behavior.
Especially in our current time. A tragic part of our history. Let’s never repeat. |

Pulling together...yes! My dad and his brothers went to enlist shortly after Pearl. His 2 brothers went into the Army Air Corps. Dad, a turkey rancher, was told to keep raising turkeys for Uncle Sam.

My wife's great Uncle "Bud" was on the USS Nevada - the only Battleship to get underway during the attack - in Pearl Harbor when it was trying to escape the Japanese attack and got hit by a torpedo and at least six bombs. They beached it and it was able to be repaired and steamed back to the west coast for repairs. His stories mesmerized me 35 years ago.
An ex-girlfriend had a grandfather who was a sub-commander stationed in Pearl Harbor. He and her father (who was only about 4 or 5 at the time) told amazing first hand accounts of the attack. her dad, who was just a kid, was playing out front and saw the Japanese fighter-bombers attacking the fleet and ran into the house to alert his parents, who were still sleeping. Amazing stories. I miss all of them. |

My mom was a child living in Waianae (West Oahu) during the attack. She said she was the planes coming in and waved to them, not knowing who they were or what they were about to do.
There were also civilian casualties in Honolulu. This took place a couple blocks away from my house in town. Looking at the picture of the lady's descendents, the woman in the upper right is my classmate. Kisa Hatate – Dec. 7, 1941 Civilian Casualty – Remembrance

Earlier in my life, my view every morning, for about four years, was looking across from the drydocks to Ford Island and the USS Arizona. It is a very special place.
