Am I crazy?
 

I inherited a 1940 German Luger in amazing shape. I know what they go for on Gunbroker. I’ve never shot it. In the original holster, matching number clip. Good friend has seen it and wants it. He’s a huge gun collector so he knows his business.


I’ve always wanted a 1911 Colt 45. I know he’d do me right in a trade. Should I?

Actually... I would not trade .... my Combat Commander is 44 years mine.

Just my opinion but you have a piece of history . So no I wouldn't trade .

History yes but imho opinion it’s somewhat tainted. Friend is going to send some pics tonight of the gun he’s going to trade. I’ll post pics of it and and the Luger tonight.

is it a war era colt with history as well or a modernish shooter?

colt 1911 could mean a lot of different things, 100+ years from the first to the ones they made this afternoon

I would say if there's any sentimental value to the luger, then stick with that. But it doesn't sound like there is.

If there's no personal attachment to the Luger, and you'd rather have a cool 1911, and you have a way to get one, then go for it. Presumably, your buddy is going to trade a collectible 1911 for your collectible luger. So you're still going to have a collectible spoon.

Go for it. But before you do, post pics of the luger!

These are some old pics of the Luger when I got it. After consulting another 1911 guru he said the Singer and Remington are also very desirable?

That's a nice Luger. I'd keep that and pay cash for a 1911.

Or if you really want to trade it, get it professionally valued, as Luger values are all over the place. Shame Tabs isn't around as he could tell you a lot about it from the serial number alone.

If the pistol doesn't have sentimental value or use to you other than as a valuable trinket then I don't think you're crazy trading/selling it for something you will use and enjoy. Life's too short to have toys you never play with...

It may be more useful to sell it for a good price and then use that money to fund that custom-fitted 1911 (and probably a fair amount of ammo).

What's the trade value or cash price on that Luger? IMHO, that Colt is mediocre. Nickel is too blingy, it's a scratch magnet, the sights suck and it's probably been rode hard and put away wet. I have a Series 70 Commander my mom bought for my dad when I was six for $150. I grew up with it and it's one of the good ones. I've owned several other Commanders and they all sucked. I'm sour on Colt 1911s, but I got one a good one. Much better options out there, depending on budget.

FWIW, I was in the local gun store a while back when I saw an old woman with a walker on her cell phone and overheard her saying, "They told me $600 for the Luger." The deal was already done, but I got to look it over and it was a bring-back, had capture papers, original holster, etc. They probably flipped it for $3k the next day.

Then you need to part with it (I'd do the same).

Is it a war trophy brought back by your grandpa? If so, keep it in the family. If it’s just something your dad picked up at a gun show 20myears back it’s open to discussion.

I bought a 38’ s42 luger for around 2 grand. Holster wear and a perfect bore. A blast to shoot and not care of diminishing the value.


I would not trade it for a measly 1911.
