Any Scirocco fans?

So I'm looking at a job today, some resto work on a beautiful old Craftsman house in my neighborhood in L.A. The owner is a Japanese-American guy who lives half the time in Japan, this was the house he grew up in here and he has inherited it from his parents who are gone from this earth. Very interesting guy, very interesting house.

Anywhoo, while wrapping-up the appointment and chatting in the driveway, i notice a small car under a cover in the carport. Of course I need to know what's under cover. Turns out it's a mint Mk I Scirocco with a turbo kit, it belongs to his younger brother who lives on east coast and it's been sitting for quite a while. I actually met the brother a few weeks ago when he was in town.

Does he want to sell it?

Possibly. He will ask. Now there is also a potential for barter, as well. I absolutely freaking love 1st generation Sciroccos. I've wanted one since they were new. This one supposedly has a really high quality aftermarket turbo installed that was very expensive at the time but he did not know the brand, etc...

Of course, I took photos for you guys. Always thinking about my Pelican bros.

Man that car is sweet! I haven't seen one that nice in years. My older brother had a couple of pretty clean 16V cars in their day, but never a Mk1 like that! Thanks for sharing... I wonder what he wants for that bad guy?

Nice, I had one in the same color during high school and college. No turbo though and for a while no reverse. Thanks for the pics as I don't have any of mine. That certainly brings back memories, the smell especially was "unique"

I've owned two, and would love a MK1. That car looks awesome, and could be a neat little find.

They are Guigaro (sp?) designed, and I think one of the best early front-wheel drive coupes out there.

Hope it works out for you.

Yes, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and one of the most beautiful small cars ever, IMHO. I worked at the dealer when the MkII cars were out, 16v, etc. Somehow, those do nothing for me. But the MkI was the shiznit.

This car is close to mint and the interior looks flawless. Just amazing. It is not actively for sale but I'm going to poke him with a stick and see what he's thinking. He sure doesn't see it or drive it anymore.

That car is a find, and most likely will not be too expensive to purchase. From the looks of the pictures, and the rocks and debris under the car; it looks to have been sitting for sometime. Please keep us updated as to what comes of this, I get almost as excited seeing one of those on the road as I do a nice air-cooled 911.... almost

Flippin' sweet! Hope it works out for you, Denis! Would really enjoy hearing more about it.

Back in 1996 I found an '83 Scirocco for $700. It's clutch was so bad, I barely made it the 4 miles to my house. Showed 250k kilometers/155k miles ( Canadian car ) on the odo. The used dealer thought it was miles.
That car cleaned up so nice. Ran so smooth, solid power with zero hiccups. Should've kept it.

I'd really like to have one again.

I was living in Germany when the Scirocco came out. Still think they are a great looking car. Those and the first generation GTI.

I seem to recall that Callaway made turbo kits for VWs.

My first car was an '81 Rabbit, which I loved, but I would've killed for a 16v Scirocco. Of course, pre-internet, had no idea of the Mk1 car, but probably wouldn't have appreciated it at the time anyway. The angular lines of the early cars will surely go down as one of the few classics of the late 70's.
Given that I live in a 1914 Craftsman, maybe the car would feel most at home here

1982 and newer are Mk2 cars, completely different animal design-wise. They were designed in-house by VW as opposed the the Mk1 which was designed by GG, arguably the greatest living/working designer at the time.

Only the Mk1 cars give me cravings. I had a new RX-7 in 1979 but I really wanted a Scirocco.

Sweet! Hope the car is a 75, so smog check exempt.

I thought the sticker said BAE, but upon closer observation, it does not.

I lived with my older cousin, who is an Architect in SF, when I was a freshmen in college. He had a white 1977 Scirocco.

As much as I loved my 1972 2002, his car had all the right notes, especially the exhaust. What a fine ride, miles ahead of the older BMW.
