Mach 6.5

And it's a wide-body!
Beijing to New York in two hours...doubt I'll ever see it.

I call BS.

The SR71 was made of titanium and required the panels to not be tight together to allow for thermal expansion, and it had a special fuel and tanker just for the SR71. The SR71 had a top speed of Mach 3.2 but some say it hit Mach 3.5. Many parts of the SR-71 reached from 400-500 degrees Fahrenheit, but the airframe above the engines reached over 1,000 degrees. Overall, the average skin temperature of the SR-71 was over 600 degrees. The quartz glass in the cockpit was 1.25-inches thick, and was hot to the touch from the inside! Pilots, even with gloves on, couldn’t keep their hands by the glass for more than a few seconds without doing damage

Maybe if it can get to 100,000 feet where the air is thinner, but that is pretty high for air breathing aircraft.

If one can believe them...they say in the article that a prototype has already been test flown at mach 6.5

GH85Carrera 12-13-2024 11:51 AM

Sure, and they are not really hacking all the phone systems in the USA!

stevej37 12-13-2024 01:07 PM

If they can build one that will haul a couple hundred or more passengers...it would be great.

onewhippedpuppy 12-13-2024 06:35 PM

I’ll believe it when I see it. That sort of speed is difficult for a weapons system with limited maneuverability, for a passenger airplane it would require some major breakthroughs.

Simple. Engage quantum drive.

Like The Orville.

stevej37 12-13-2024 06:57 PM

Yeah...it's not like they achieved warp drive.
That will come later.

Timothyvroy 12-13-2024 07:15 PM

They have better jets

Geez guy, they simply spray the airplane with wesson oil. That way the air slides right off.

Boy, it's like I have to think of everything.

I'm gonna use this on an aviation site I'm on!
Thanx!

masraum 12-14-2024 10:25 AM

I'm sure that we're all aware of the facts about the SR-71 and the details required to get it to go over mach 3 at 85000'. I assume it's quite a bit more difficult to get a passenger plane to go nearly twice as fast.

Although I did see Tom Cruise go over mach 9 in the latest Top Gun movie!

that's probably quicker and easier than wiping it down with vaseline which is what I told them to do.

The govt being who they are and with all of those smart folks, I'm sure that they probably went this route.

Multiple sources have indicated that the WZ-8 can loiter and flies at maximum speeds of between Mach 6 and Mach 7, and with current Western long range air to air missiles such as the AIM-120 and Meteor flying well below Mach 5 they would need to be over twice as fast to pose a serious threat.

The drone was reportedly deployed at Anqing Airbase in 2021.[7] In 2023, US intelligence reported the drone and its H-6 mothership are currently operated by the Eastern Theater Command Air Force out of Liu'an Airbase in Anhui province.
Would be quite the leap to make an unmanned rocket powered drone requiring a mother ship into a commercial passenger platform, but the speeds have been done which is my point.
