Buying an airline gift card

I want to buy a gift card for a trip to France this coming May as a Christmas present.

Anyone do this? Do's and don'ts?

I've only bought Costco Southwest gift cards. Good deals when they are discounted.

I'm not sure there is any advantage to an airline specific gift card purchase over just buying a VISA, etc gift card at your local grocery store.
