Garbage Man Soliciting Tips

Last week my garbage man left a note/flyer on everyone's trashcan lid on my street (I'm sure throughout the neighborhood).

"Happy Holidays from your Trashman" with his name and a QR code to submit payment. Has anyone else seen this?

jhynesrockmtn 12-18-2024 06:50 AM

Not sure how your service works but I have never seen this in my neighborhood. Garbage collection is contracted through the City. I'm pretty sure if a driver did that, they would be in big trouble. They drive around in trucks that do the work. I've never seen the guys out of their rigs.

IROC 12-18-2024 06:52 AM

Every year. For a long time. I ignore these. Not only the trash guy, but the mailman, guy who delivers the paper, and anyone else who does something in my neighborhood on a regular basis.

The QR codes are a new one, though!

When I read the title, I initially thought he was soliciting stock tips LOL.

That said, sometimes my wife and I throw away more than a usual amount of crap and we literally said this week that we wished there was a way to tip them. Not sure I would want to be begged for it.

Our trash and recycling is picked up by the city. Part of the water and sewer bill. And of course the storm water cost.

Give the guy credit for entrepreneurship. And chutzpah.

(We have three wheelie bins each in my city; Trash, recycling and yard debris, each picked up by a specific truck. Not gonna tip my trashman x3.)

Never seen it but I do it every year in person.. and I'd like to think that when my cardboard or whatever is borderline too much, he takes it anyway (so far so good). I know some folks get the little "note" instead, I never do, he takes my crap away. Worth it.

greglepore 12-18-2024 08:22 AM

They do it here as well, not the guy but the company leaves their names etc. Ours are good guys and work crazy hard, no ill feelings about the tip note.

Or it's a scammer following the garbage truck around and putting notes on the cans. Brilliant if you think about it.
Why not just put a bucket of cash at the end of your driveway with a note that says take some if you need it?

Our trash is picked up by a private company contracted with the County. I used to tape a Christmas card with $20 to the trash can the last pick up before Christmas. That was when it was picked up by hand. Now it's totally done mechanically, so no tip for him.

Took me a while to get those QR codes linked to my account ... $eem$ to be working great now :)

The last garbage man that left me a note was from Waste Management and it stated "please allow at least 12 inches between garbage cans"

I cancelled them immediately and went with a different company.

I passed out QR codes for Christmas. Next thinking you know I'm cuffed and sitting in a squad car.

Garbageman, mailman, UPS guy, etcetera, no problem. I would throw a couple bucks their way. They have no conduit for folks to show appreciation and it could add up to a couple hundred bucks each year for them. Not a crime.

E.g., the UPS guy says "You are the only one here?" and my sort of desolate place? "You just get car parts mostly? I'll leave it even if you are supposed to sign". Everybody wins.

Every place you go to is up your ask for a tip and then a buck for this or that initiative/cause. I'm on their side.

billybek 12-18-2024 01:31 PM

What if some random guy was throwing the notes out there and not the garbage collector?
Hmmm. Might not be a bad scam.

WOW!

Initial reaction, "WTF?!?"

Secondary reaction, "Way to get with the modern age and go high tech asking for tips, Mr Trashman!"

Right, there have been times when I thought the same "man, wish I could tip the guys for taking that load away" or not leaving a bunch of crap laying around or whatever.

But a card with a QR code, would bug me too.

Just like the mailman. I think we have one main mail person (nice lady), but then have several others that may show up on any day at random, not sure if it's due to the main lady having a vacation day or sick day or what. But I would hate to leave a tip in the mailbox, and have that go to someone other than the main lady.

Yep, would be evil genius. Have several thousand notes printed and drive around for a couple of weeks and rake in the money, because you know some folks are being generous.

Is that what the kids are calling it these days? :D

I'm sure there's a half a dozen jokes in that one...

Baz 12-18-2024 01:47 PM

I always take care of those who take care of me. I know their names and schedules so no-brainer this time of year.

Never seen any soliciting. Guess I'm old school and feel tips should be given freely without any coercion......
