I have a flooring question, please.

What is this sheet stuff on my floor (pic below)? It's black, sticky on one side, and has a fabric finish on the other. Any ideas why it's there? More importantly, do I need to replace the chunk I pulled up?

I'm working on my floor again. One reason is to fill a low spot that caused a vinyl plank to crack. The other reason is I reinstalled the old flooring when fixing a different low spot last year. Apparently the flooring is only designed to go down once. The flooring I reused started failing right away.

The sheeting.

The 'low spot' in my 100 year old floor. (I can only guess the concrete is from a long gone little patio.)

Looks like some sort of *****ithane type membrane. Don't bother replacing it, float it flat with Feather Finish. I think you can find it at Home Depot.
Also, that's a rough way to install LVT planks. They should be clicked together all the way to the end wall before starting the next course.

Vapor barrier, perhaps?

Thanks for suggesting I leave it off. It's an answer I like :)

As for the flooring, I didn't feel like pulling up and replacing all 900 sq/ft. I just pulled up what was messed up. I surgically removed the last several boards ensuring the end-locks are retained. Once I weave four new ones in, the rest house down as you describe.

Here's what happens if you damage the end locks.

They're not meant to be weaved. The lock system on the sides are meant to be started at a 30° angle then snapped downward. I'm not saying it can't be weaved but jus sayin.
It's important to have positive locking on all 4 sides of every board

Ha! No truer words, according to my life experiences

Popping in to let y'all know I got my floor fixed. It cost me $400, including buying an oscillating saw. I was quoted $1,800.

Looks fine!

Great - and you've got the saw to fix (or make) something else later!

I always love it when DIY includes new tools for less than a contractor. :D

Right now I'm building up my courage. I want to replace my shower stall this year.

You’re gonna need a bikini and a shower cap for starters.

Floor looks great. We're about 1.5 hours south of you but if you want to borrow any tools, I've got them.

You can do the shower, I've got any demo and tile tools you could need.

Thank you for the kindly offer. I was thinking just a simple insert like the picture below. My fear isn't the effort. My fear is having mice and critters finding there way into my house while things are apart. Good Lord I hate mice!

Remind me, are you in Naples or Cape Coral?

.....

Mice aren't as bad as the friggin squirrels I've been dealing with in NJ. ;)

Install of that would be pretty quick, I'm sure you could seal with something as you go.

Is the existing shower tile, prefab/fiberglass, or other?
