In the summer, my gas bill is $45/mth (mostly the service charge). December was $90, so ~$45. February 2024 the bill was $172, but I think some of that was a power outage and the generator costs about $25-30/day to run.

2600sq/ft ranch. Had heating oil when we moved in and in 2008 it cost $350-$400 er month in oil. We insulated the attic and put in a geothermal heat pump and we run $800-$900 per year for both heating and cooling. Plus it puts hot water in the water heater tank for us when it runs.

I have a small 2 bedroom house. I use a heat pump when it is above 35 degrees outside and a gas furnace below 35 degrees. It can get down to 0 degrees some years. Gas comes from a different supplier than electric. Maybe $400 to $500 per winter keeping it 74 degrees.

Last three days it cost me $11, $13 and $14 dollars to heat. That is with wind driven temps ranging from -2 up to 13 for the high. Thankfully, the wind has let up, temps are in the teens and my heat pump is back to doing the majority of the work. My thermostat "learns" the house and determines which heat source to use. I have the heat pump cutoff set at 2 degrees but the thermostat had the gas furnace running primarily over the last three days.

Gas prices have been all over the place, and my bill has definitely reflected that. I switched suppliers recently and used an Octopus referral code to get a little extra credit, which helped offset the costs. Insulation and thermostat settings make a big difference too—lowering the temp a couple of degrees at night has saved me a decent amount. Anyone else notice big fluctuations in their heating costs this year?

I feel for you guys that live in cold environments, especially if you're on heating oil. Here in Arizona, my gas bill is essentially non-existent during the warm months (hot water heater is only thing really using gas and it doesn't take much) and in the winter months, my bill is maybe $75/month.
Summer used to kill us with the electric bill ($300+/month) due to running the AC all day (and all night some months) but since I put in my solar, that bill rarely goes over $50/month ($35 is just the connection fee). |
