Porsche….. There is no substitute.

It wasn’t my first choice, but…

Most folks won't get it, but I like it!

Nice color

A930Rocket 02-07-2025 01:33 PM

Probably not, especially nowadays

I just want you to know that if someone strategically "Sharpie's" in a "U".....It wasn't me.

I do, however, respect the original message!

A930Rocket 02-07-2025 05:49 PM

This was actually my third choice after Porsche and 86 911. I knew Porsche would be taken, but I was hoping I could get the 86 911 to match my buddies 86 930 plate.

When I got the letter acknowledging the plate, they had PTINS written and I figured anybody looking at it quickly would think PENIS ! lol

speeder 02-07-2025 05:51 PM

A little obtuse, tbh. I've been a Porsche nut for 50 years and I would not get that.

speeder 02-07-2025 05:55 PM

Good old Iris Blue. I was selling those at the dealer in '86.

rfuerst911sc 02-08-2025 01:43 AM

My Boxster S has a 3.6 engine . My plate says 986S36L .
My 996 C4 has a 3.8 engine . My plate says 996C438.

Just a little fun that is worth the extra $ at the DMV .

Took me a minute, that’s pretty good. I bet 99 out of 100 people will have no idea. If you want to help them out, get one of those “There Is No Substitute” license plate frames.:)

Yeah .... I would see a "PUTINS" Porsche too :D

Shaun @ Tru6 02-08-2025 07:12 AM

Points for originality on the plate. Car looks beautiful, post some pics if you can.

Seeing it strikes a chord, God I can't wait to get my car back on the road. Big snow storm tomorrow so months away still.

2005-ish there was a 930 in the work parking lot in Naperville. "NO SUB"

I was clueless until I found the guy and asked. Up until then I was thinking Nitrous?

I like the license plate holder idea.

wildthing 02-08-2025 08:59 AM

I got a shirt with that line for being interviewed at a PCA event.

Probably ended up on the cutting room floor, but I still got the shirt.

I’ve got this license plate holder lined up!

Back in the late 70s or maybe early 80s, I had that on a triumph TR6 for a while. One day in traffic, there was a car of big girls behind me, and I thought they were going to jump out and pummel me.😂

No, it’s not going on the car but back on the shelf with all the old license plates.

I'm with OWP. I think a "No Substitute" frame would be fitting. Would explain the TINS to the 99.99999% of people who don't get the reference.

1962 Bug in the middle. Lots of mods and fast.

The blue Turbo is my friends. I had an 87 930 and there’s a big difference vs the Carrera. Maybe not so much around town but in the higher RPM’s and the track. My 930 had 400 rwhp. I like my Targa, but the wide body 911 is my favorite.

Shaun @ Tru6 02-09-2025 01:12 PM

Someday I want to put a Turbo motor into my M491. It's quick, lightened with a 7:31 R&P, but can always use more power.

GH85Carrera 02-09-2025 01:34 PM

My 85 911 turns 40 this year. I was in the middle of Joshua Tree park, well over a thousand miles from home. It had been 30 minutes since I last saw another human. I walked over, and as always, it fired right up, and started blowing ice cold air on me.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1739139829.JPG

One year later, I was on the track at Talladega, AL driving 125 MPH with my wife in the car, just cruising with no issue, AC blowing.

Just the next day I was on track at Barber Motorsports.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1739140085.jpg

Here I am passing some slower traffic.

The car has increased in value by 5 times over what I paid for it. That is a fun toy, and there is no substitute for a Porsche. It will hit 198,000 miles fairly soon.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1739140278.jpg

It has taken me to 41 states, and Canada. I hope to get to all 48 of the lower 48.

What other 1980s car can do all that?

A930Rocket 02-09-2025 04:52 PM

The blue 930 has about 160,000 miles on it. My friend bought it with ~20k and drives it all the time. It’s been up and down the East Coast from Florida to Maine. His brother also has a 930.

There’s no substitute for horsepower! 10 or 15 years ago, you could probably get a 930 motor at a reasonable cost. I can’t imagine what a 930 motor would cost nowadays.

onewhippedpuppy 02-09-2025 05:02 PM

930Rocket, if those frames aren’t available let me know. I still have one hanging in my garage. At this point probably for old time’s sake more than anything else.

A930Rocket 02-09-2025 05:10 PM

^^^ Will do. Thanks!

You can get someone's rebuilt one for $25K to $35K. I think a good running core is $15K but those are extremely rare. Have seen more rebuilt motors for sale.

A bit of a giggle for you. I came out of a shop and across the road at the Ferrari dealership was a very high end looking Ferrari parked on the street. Next to it was a beaten up looking old Beetle. The three salesmen saw my eyes light up and were poised to move and make a deal. I completely ignored the Ferrari and walked around the VW admiring all aspects of it. Out of the corner of my eye I could see the salesmen almost doubled up laughing.
