Holiday Cocktails
Football game party...host wife made up a bunch of these and I tried one.
Not bad, strong but tasty. I prefer beer, but it was a nice change. Paul and his daughter Mary. How can it be bad if Paul drinks it? ![]() Any other favorites?

Not so much a cocktail, but it's summertime here and I'm going to make sangria.

I've just looked it up too. My take on it is much different to how it should be, but...
In a large pitcher Pour in half a bottle of good dark rum Most of a bottle of pinot noir or another light red wine- again a nice one. About the same quantity as the wine, add a fruit juice. I tend to use pineapple juice, but anything you like. Then top it up with Sprite lemonade, or another one. Chop up fruit and add some ice (not too much). It's a bit of a sneaky drink. You feel that you are drinking something healthy and the more you drink the healthier you'll be - right. Until you come to stand up. |

^^^ Thanks
Myers Rum has always been my favorite. In my younger years, we used to make our own Kahlua from scratch. It was always good.

Fall and winter, it's sometimes bourbon and Old Fashioneds for me, but nothing beats a Sidecar.
Courvoisier VSOP, Cointreau and fresh lemon juice.

^^^ I'd try that. Sometimes beer in the cold season is too filling...especially in the later evening.

This is one we make every year. Feuerzangenbowle. Red wine, clove spiced orange slices, and the sugar cone.
You drench the sugar cone with Bacardi 151 (letting a little extra flow into the mulled wine) and light it on fire. Unfortunately you can't buy 151 rum in California anymore (too high in alcohol) so we have to find the highest proof rum available. Similar to Gluhwein.

^^^ Same here in Michigan...they took 151 off the shelf.
In college 'flaming shots' of 151 were 'the thing'. One of my buddies decided to throw one back and missed his pie hole.....can you say 'Flaming Face'? He never even got burned...we still kid him about that.

When I was in college I went home to work weekends and see HS friends, go to parties at UMass. Played quarters with 151 and Coke one night. Was in a coma for 9 hours. I can see why they took it off the shelf.

Related to the thread. When I was a school boy we used to sneak into the yard of a cigarette factory and find the drums that had contained rum. By careful and skilled tipping we could collect enough rum for a party of drunken school kids.

^^^ How were rum barrels used in a cig factory?
Or were they there for workers lunch breaks?

Sangria is one of our favorites. I found a favorite over this past year - Redbreast Irish Whiskey. I tried a bottle from Costco out of curiosity, and it was really very good. In fact it was so good, my wife liked it. Great for sipping from a shot glass. Unfortunately it is't available from the local Costco anymore, and twice the price elsewhere.

Fall is indeed Bourbon (Woodford please) season for me... But then again, things using cranberry (Ocean Spray, maybe the crangrape or cranapple mix too) and vodka (Titos) can do well.... as can cinnamon or peppermint schnapps while drinking good coffee or hot coco ... An redneck coffee (irish coffee w/ bourbon or tenn whiskey instead of irish) can be good too, if you have good strong coffee and fresh whipped cream for it....

They used rum and port to flavour the tobacco. We were only after the rum. Usually we scored about a pint of the stuff, but it was real fire water compared with Coruba or Captain Morgan.

Dewars Rusty Nail please!
A rusty nail is a cocktail made by mixing Scotch whisky with Drambuie in a 1:1 to 2:1 ratio. A rusty nail is most commonly served on the rocks in an old-fashioned glass (a.k.a. a rocks glass), although it can also be served "up" in a stemmed glass. Its origin goes back to the 1937 British Industries Fair, but it did not become popular until the 1950s endorsement by New York's 21 Club and its recognition by popular culture as the go-to cocktail of the Rat Pack a decade later
