RIP Danny Diliberto
Rest in peace, Danny Deliberto...his recent death saddened the pool world. But what a life he had! I enjoyed his yarns & commentary while watching many recorded pool matches. He was a hellofa pool player, but that's not all...he is in two hall of fames. One for boxing, one for pool. His manager in boxing? Angelo Dundee...Danny had 14 pro fights as a lightweight, winning all, IIRC. Angelo Dundee was the one to tell Danny to quit, because he had fragile hands...broken too many times. When commentating on a match, Danny told a tale of a time he was busy, had his son answer the phone. The kid came back in the room, said; "How do you know Angelo Dundee?"
There are few videos of Danny playing...but I did find this one. Fuzzy old tape, but if you can look carefully and note crooked fingers...still, he was good, even this late in his pro career. Enjoy. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5Lh-3IAXFnE" title="9-Ball - JOHNNY ARCHER vs DANNY DILIBERTO - 1989 Lexington 9-Ball" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
