screw/clamp on exhaust tips

I知 struggling with what color exhaust tips to use, black or chrome. So I知 thinking instead of welding on tips maybe I can get ones I can switch out. My only concern is them not staying in place which would look funny if shifted and dangerous if they come off on the highway.

Anyone have luck with them?

One of my fears is my tips falling off.
The clamps are stupid tight and I wiggle the tips every now and again to check.

It's been MANY years, but I have experience. Back in the day, at the FLAPS you could get exhaust clamps and HD exhaust clamps. THe HD clamps were, at the very least thicker steel. You could tighten/clamp the HD clamps down until you dimpled/crimped the metal. Nothing was going to fall off that way. As a matter of fact, you could take the clamp off and pound it with a hammer and have a hard time getting it off. If you used the regular, cheaper clamps, they would break before you managed to get them that tight.

My B&B clamps are pretty robust.

You can get those clamps at places like Summit and Jegs. Flaps ain't gonna stock those, unless you have a Friendly local race shop.

The actual Porsche tips on my 996 had clamps built into them. My 997 came with titanium tips but I have some Sharkwerks tips on it now and the Ti ones packed away.

Are you going aftermarket?

I’m trying. I bought a gen 2 986 muffler with no tips on it (gen 2 has removable tips). I am going to put on either black or chrome tips that extend about an inch beyond the bumper. I wanted to use bolt on so I could swap depending on taste but it seems the distance between muffler and where I want the tip to end is not long enough. I’m way overthinking this.

Question, I've heard that the factory used "Cookie Cutter tips on some exhaust, including megaphones to prevent the pipe tip from being flattened and choking the engine?

Hah! I was gifted the 'factory cookie cutters' on my birthday a few days ago; I had to give them a go and they turned out awesome!

(They're really just stamps, but you get the gist)

How is the muffler made? Do the tips bolt to it?

Here is what the 997 tips look like, have not owned a 986 so not sure if they bolt on the same way.

The 986.2 has similar tips that I believe hang on a lip and have one bolt on the bottom to tighten. I haven’t found any tips that give the look I’m going for so this is where I’m at.
I’m not sure but I don’t think the pipes coming off the muffler body are horizontal. I think when the muffler is hung, the pipes point a bit downward which means I have to figure this out with muffler on car. I could be wrong but from looking at the muffler on my car, it seems the case.

Don't drop the muffler on your toe unless those are steel toed socks.

It does indeed look like those pipes come out of the muffler between 45ｺ and 60ｺ angled down, and then have a curve to the tips to bring them back to horizontal.
