Deep Water - 2006 - Full Movie - Golden Globe Race and Donald Crowhurst

https://youtu.be/SiWv12EL4LE?si=h8pk1_mLpwJUwG9K

I find this story about Donald Crowhurst very tragic, but at the same time, it's kind of fascinating.
The man basically backed himself into a corner and felt he had no way out of his self fabricated situation. Add to that, he is alone at sea, and I'm sure that aloneness would have an effect on one's mind.
It must truly be a sad thing to be so alone with yourself to the point that you are just done.

LOL! Not to be confused with the 2022 Ben Affleck & Ana de Armas movie of the same name.

I did a search to read more about this, but the first thing that popped up with a movie (vs this documentary). It is a VERY different sort of movie.

Here is some video and audio that Donald Crowhurst recorded while out there on the ocean. It is sad to hear someone who is on a downward spiral like he was and being alone at sea with no one to help work out the situation that he placed himself in, it apparently drove the man mad, obviously.

Indeed, it's quite a story. Reading about Cowhurst, I felt sorry for him. Just a damned sad tale.

I feel like this is never a good start to a young life.

His mother was a schoolteacher and his father worked in the Indian railways. During her pregnancy, his mother had longed for a daughter, and Crowhurst was dressed as a girl until the age of seven.
A parent that would do that seems a bit unhinged, and doing that to a child seems unlikely to not have an impact.

Such a sad story. He was really unprepared for the task. The documentary gave me anxiety watching him paint himself into a corner.

The huil of his boat is sitting on a beach someplace in the caribbean, cant remember where. At least it was a few years ago.

A side note in that race that I always thought sort of funny is that of Bernard Moitessier. "The French entrant famously continued sailing his sturdy yacht Joshua, rounded Cape Horn, then continued on for a second circuit of the Southern Ocean and ended up in Tahiti to “save my soul” as he put it – rather than heading back to civilization, a possible winner and certain fame". After sailing 9/10's of the race he's like, nah, Im going again. In one documentary I saw, his wife simply said "Men will be men". Seemed so French.

Yep, I believe the Frenchman had the right idea.

The boat's remains, or what's left of it, are on an island called Cayman Brac, near the west end of the island.
