Cat veterinarians

Cat veterinarians -may I ask a question?
Cat is diagnosed with perhaps liver and kidney problems.
They wanted 1500 for further prognoses.

Our feline friend was prescribed Lactated Ringer's.
They said to come back for refills.,
and needles.
I did.
I discovered once here at home they sold me a bag of
0.9% Sodium Chloride.
I have attempted to understand the google answers...not EZ.
(Red blood cell absorption)
Phoned The vet,, said I have the the wrong stuff, and would be ok, but the Lactated solution was better.
Come back 45 miles and get the correct bag. (Lactated)
I will if that is correct.
IDK
There is a bunch of people there with a bunch of confusion always
thanx for the read and help!

AB - sorry to hear of your kitty's health issue.

I can't help you with the technical part of your questions.....but looks like these are available from Chewy with an Rx, which I'm sure your vet could provide. Delivery by Chewy would save all that driving anyway.

https://www.chewy.com/icu-medical-lactated-ringers/dp/173586?gad_source=1

I am not a vet or even some kind of expert, so naturally what I post should be verified and confirmed by your choice of practitioners.

Good luck to your little one!

My cat's blood work was done a couple months back when she was not doing well. she had high white blood cell count and there were indications of poor liver function. They wanted to do xrays, ultrasound and other testing that was going to be in excess of $1000. I consulted my vet buddy after sending him the bloodwork and he suggested a specific injectable antibiotic that will last in their system up to two weeks.

Since I would not sign on for all the additional testing the vet would not return my calls (did a week later). I got a hold of a local mobile vet who saw us in two days, gave the injection she suggested that matched what my buddy had recommended. Helped significantly, that and recommendation of an OTC supplement that helps in restoring liver function. Still giving her that dry supplement daily. She is doing better, out all day again exploring the forest and doing her thing. She is 13 years old so I was not gunna pony up for anything further than the $300 blood work, and the $150 for the mobile vet house call and injection. Good luck with the kitty,

Thanx folks.
This place is always the best!
Yes, it is diminishing returns ..i guess
The cats are part of the family, but a line is drawn as to how much to spend on the critters.
Within reason is a few hundred.
Not 1500.
I did talk to the vet today, and got a replacement bag of what he had .
This vet is just one mistake after another...not impressed.
The cat is still walking eating and living.
If he appears to get into pain or not living right, I will have to do the kind thing.
Until then..
Thanks again.
This is apreciated.

I had a cat with kidney problems and had to give IV fluids, just saline, not fun but he responded very well to it. I just kept an eye on how hydrated he was by lifting his skin by his shoulder blade and see how fast it went back down, sometimes he could go a week or more without any added fluid other times a day or two. Not sure if you vet mentioned to warm up the IV bag in warm water and bring it closer to body temp first or not, I found that helped him tolerate the injection.

Thanx!-
Yes, I asked if it was a good idea to warm it up B4 injection, , and they said yes.
Yup , between the shoulders, 100 CC looks like a camel for a few minutes!
LOP.

Did the same, warming the bag in a bowl of hot water. Cat was stage 4 kidney failure, got 100cc ringers daily and lived 15 really good months. Diet was changed to kidney food, by comparison a can of salmon was a bargain.

Alternate needle locations into scruff about an inch apart.

Not a veterinarian, but usually, the choice of fluid is based upon whatever condition you're trying to treat.

Normal sodium (NS) is just water with sodium and chloride.

Lactated ringers (LR) has sodium and chloride (though in slightly different concentrations than in NS), potassium, lactate, and calcium. In general, LR is a bit closer to what blood is like (obviously minus the blood cells).

And then there are 1/2 NS and 1/2 LR concentrations, too.

For healthy people (and animals), it probably doesn't matter which fluid is given. Our kidneys and general metabolism will figure it all out. If your cat is at home, it probably won't make a huge difference what fluid gets injected subcutaneously. But for sick creatures (sick enough to be hospitalized), the fluid given usually reflects what we're trying to replace. Fluid loss from dehydration vs blood loss vs excessive urine output vs diarrhea vs gastric suctioning, etc. Does the patient have kidney insufficiency/failure? What are their labs (bloodwork) like? Those are the aspects that go into determining what IV fluid gets selected.

Thanx for all the help folks .
Appreciate it.
He is in pain no more.
He got very very sick, had to alleviate that.
It was the right thing to do.

Sorry, AB. Thank you for taking care of your responsibilities to your best bud. The ultimate last gesture of respect and love one can perform. And the hardest on the planet.

Take care, brother.....

Thank you . Very much.
In trying to be logical, it is an animal.,,,,,,,,
The lines, the lines do do get blurred.
Between people and animals.

Pets do become part of the family and are greatly missed.
Every one of them having their own distinct personality.
In trying to be more "Spock "like, and , it is not EZ.
Thank you.
