gobble gobble!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1742329376.jpg
Was hearing gobbles from one bird an hour before dawn 15 minutes after sunrise I had 15 birds in front of me including 4 gobblers, almost missed out on this guy due to lack of shot that would've also taken out a hen or immature male Turkey enchilada time! |
Nice, congrats!
How does a wild turkey compare to the store-bought stuff? Flavor, fat, size, toughness. |
Quote:
Breast tastes same as store bought, thighs and legs have a TON more cartilage and connective tissue so they make really great soup or stock. Sometimes the thigh and leg meat ends up being super chewy, sometimes not. This is a bird just into maturity so should be good eats all the way around. |
Thanks for the reminder. I went and just bought my hunting license and game-stamp.
Our opener is the 29th. In my enthusiasm I already have the breast meat reciped out. Pad Krapow turkey! Thai style. |
Legs and carcass get turned into bone broth and frozen for later use.
|
Nice! Our spring turkey season isn't until 4/19 :(
|
Nobody shoots the turkeys around here. They drift around in flocks up to two dozen and go any place they want.
|
^^^ Same here...but I've noticed that very few are hit by cars.
They may not be fast walking...but they're smart as far as traffic goes. :) |
People here slow down for them and get mad if someone runs over one. This happens once in a while when somebody is driving fast.
|
Damn things are pests here...

This was a couple of season ago. Usually there are at least twice as many.

Watched a few of those jumbo jets fly from roost to I guess another roost this past season while duck hunting. I really don't know anything about turkeys and it was a pretty crazy sight.
Have had smoked turkey breast and it was pretty tasty. I will say though the guy that cooked it is very good with food so not sure I could duplicate. |
