Honest mistake or fishing to SCAM? texting dead dad...

I'm cynical. My guess is that this is a new SCAM intro. Hit folks up with something that they are likely to respond to and then you've got them engaged, a little chatting and then you start asking for money.

But this is certainly new and creative

I hope that isn't your valid phone number on the screenshot?

I don't open unsolicited texts & emails, they go right in the trash.

I believe in many cases they know if you've opened them (took the bait).

Emails - read receipts and tracking pixels
Texts - read receipts and clickable links

I don't think so. My guess is that the person sends this chat, and then if the receiver has a good heart, they respond "I'm sorry. I'm not your dad, etc..." Then the scammer keeps chatting, builds a rapport and eventually has a sad story that then leads to money changing hands.

Nope, that's the source of the text, not my number.

I have my phone set to not send "read receipts" and don't click links in texts from folks that I don't know. I'm pretty careful about texts and emails.
