Black Air. The Buick Grand National Documentary.
Black Air The Buick Grand National Documentary 2012 - Video Dailymotion
A GN owner mentioned this in another thread. It was a fun watch. The sinister mythology that surrounded the GN was like nothing I'd seen. Even non-car people were aware this thing was from another planet. Perhaps the Shelby/Yenko/Hemi 'Cuda/Chevelle LS6 of the 60s/70s had a similar shroud of folklore?

My FIL and a cousin worked at Buick in the 80's. The cuz worked on the GN line.
A GNX is on my wish list of cars I would buy if we win the lottery.

The Grand National is my lottery car. Almost bought one when I was 19 - that was probably a good miss.

When I was 24 I had a slightly modified 1987 Turbo Regal. With a computer chip and a Cat bypass that thing was stupid fast. Way too fast for a 24 year old. Well just this side of too fast, it never got away from me. I've owned 25 cars in 29 years. That car and my RS America are the two I miss.
At the drag strip in '95.

Before I knew what they were I got whooped by a T-Type one night on the street in my small block Camaro. Pretty embarrassing, to say the least. My car ran mid 12's at the track. I would say his probably ran in the low 11's. This was around 1992. I did my research after that and never raced another one.

Lottery car?
Hell, it's more like a great weekend at the casino car. Or maybe a big scratch-off ticket car.

Plus stacks of rear tires, a tire machine and a lawyer on retainer for the inevitable tickets.

A friend of mine had his own independent MBZ shop and did a good deal of bracket racing. He had a GN and then a GNX. He said the engines had Indy car blocks. He also had a GMC Syclone which he modified heavily. Hold the brake, rev up the motor and release. It felt like being catapulted off an aircraft carrier.

My older sister has a 1987 T-Type. Quick car.

I heard all the hype about them, but thought "How fast can a Buick Regal with a V6 be?"
...Then I got a ride in one. Great cars. |

You have to put the car in historical perspective. This is the mid 80's were talking about. It was a sleeper.

Seems like a dog to me, sorry! I think my 1990 Nissan Maxima had 220 and probably weighed a lot less.

I have no life so I found the specs for both plus the badass GNX.
1990 Maxima 0-60 9.1 sec. 1987 GN 0-60 6.1 sec. 1987 GNX 0-60 4.7 sec.

And that's if they are stock. I've never seen a stock one. I'm sure they exist, but I've never seen one. Every damn one of them has a least a little more heat under the hood than stock. Even just a modern upgrade on the turbo turns them into Godzilla. They were advertised at 245 horsepower but I'm pretty sure that was the most pessimistic horsepower rating this side of an L88... angela

The 87 GN was reported by Car&Driver to get 4.9 0-60.
The only production car that was faster was the 911 Turbo.

I guess I'm missing the badass-ness of this. Wouldn't you need 500ish HP to get that 0-60 time with that weight?
