Tipping a hotel room?

Based off another thread, tipping the cleaners for your hotel room?

I travel a bit, but I have never heard of this. Am I out of the loop? Am I staying in that cheap of places? (quite possible)

How do you define the tip? Based on your mess, or the nightly charge?

I almost always put the do not disturb on my door, they don't need to make my bed or give me new towels when I am there for only a couple of days. I do not trash the room, nor steal the soap or lotions.

However, a few years ago, in Vegas, they were like ninjas. Left your room for five minutes without the do not disturb, they were there! I was good about leaving the do not disturb, and I got a visitation from security so they could inspect my room, since the cleaners couldn't. They explained why, which I was fine with, but they had a hard time with why I didn't need housekeeping.

Usually when one trashes a room there's a separate charge and no tip needed.

As for the security going through a room bc you don't get housekeeping. Wtf.

Now since covid they won't even do house keeping unless you request it.

I tip the maid, the parking valet guys, the guys who bring your bags to and from the car and the bartender or waiter.

Security checking the room was after a shooting in Vegas. I understand that, and was fine with it. Just felt bad for the guys, since they came in right after I destroyed the toilet. Travel belly and all that.

They have hotels with valets and guys who move your bags to your room and not theirs?

Damn, I have been staying in low rent places.

Tipping is pretty common. I generally do not unless I have stayed a while and have developed a relationship with the staff...or if they have done something "special" to make my stay more pleasant. My tip for them is generally leaving the room as clean as I found it and not asking for anything.

In Vegas, the beach, or any expensive vacation spot, they really want to see in your room in case you have 20 people staying and paid for one or two (or a dog/cat) staying there and it is a pet free hotel or if pets allowed, you are not paying for it.

If I'm in a room for one night I leave a small tip. If I'm there several nights I leave a bigger tip on the first day of housekeeping.

wife traveled for work, she liked to tip housekeeping, a lot of workers that can really use an extra few bucks.

I leave something for the housekeeping staff. A few bucks depending on how many days I've stayed ($5-7 a day). I also leave the drinks in the fridge.

I've been to some places where they actually have an envelope in the room for the tip. With the pandemic and some places only cleaning on request or at the end of your stay I don't tip as much.

I always leave money for housekeeping when I stay at a hotel….they are under appreciated and probably work the hardest.

Pre Covid I tipped every night they clean up. Folded hotel stationery with Housekeeping written, so they know it’s for them. Post covid, only on checkout. My max stay is probably 4 days. I heard a dollar per person in the room per night but since it’s only me, I up it a bit.

I'd far rather tip the maid than the car-jockey. The tales mrs mjohnson tells, based on her summers working at a quaint CO lodge back in a previous century, are horrifying.

And rumor is that if you don't tip, you get three packets of decaf and no proper coffee for your in-room coffeemaker.

On the road, one night and gone, no.

A lot of my travel is to the same hotels for a few days at a time, so I leave a tip. My business covers the room (I don't take food money), so $5.00 a day makes sense. At the Hampton Inn I always stay at in Newport News when I check in (old reference alert) I'm like Norm from 'Cheers'.

I am looking at getting a camping trailer and parking it in our test hangar and staying in it instead of hotels, which would be much cheaper and I can write the RV off. I honestly don't need much when I am on the road and it is just me..

Tip your bartender $20 right off the bat. Your group will get served well for the rest of the night.

I recently stayed for almost a week in two different, fairly expensive hotels. There was no service the entire time. Somone told me that due to COVID, they only serviced if the occupant was there longer than a week.

During covid....that's what I found out also.
Unless there was a problem..they aren't touching your room for a week or the end of your stay.
Breakfast was replaced with a packaged bagel and a plastic cup of OJ.

Staying in FL soon...I hope it's back to normal.

I do that at concert venues. And let the bartender know that I'm a beer guy. When the line is packed with people ordering mixed drinks, I walk up and hoist the empty bottle or cup. A fresh one is handed over off to the side right away.

We saw this card at a fancy hotel in Scotland. Thought it was clever and left a decent tip.

We didn't tip anywhere else in Europe where people seem to get living wages. In the US, I will leave a little money, but we never have the room cleaned.

Hotel maid? No, why? That is along the line of tipping take out for bringing my food to the counter where I ordered and stood there waiting for it. A tip is for service and not for just doing your job.
