2025 garden thread
What a season! Damn!
The weather sucked all winter and now, March 31 it still sucks. You can tell how people feel about the future by watching how much of their own food they try to grow. This year it's like the pandemic years all over again. People are concerned about the future, if not panicking. I started ordering garden seeds in February and it's like 2021 all over again. Many of the varieties I normally get were sold out by mid-February. I had to order from 4 different places to get what I wanted. Baby chicks are sold out everywhere. I may have scored some Barred Rocks - not my favorite variety, but in this environment you take what you can get. The garlic that we planted in October died. I think it was the rapid freeze-thaw cycles we went through this winter. The Helleborus that usually starts blooming in the snow in February tried to bloom, died back, and is now finally in bloom. On the bright side, we had a few days that weren't cold and wet when I could replant the garlic and plant lettuce, salad onions, and beets. My San Marzano tomatoes have started sprouting under the grow lights, so yayyy!! ![]() Helleborus, finally blooming in March.

So far no problems getting the seeds/plants we want here in California. Onion sets planted last week as well as six different tomato plants (from local grower). Planted a half bed of sweet corn, fruit trees are blooming, now just need to plant squash, egg plant and cucumbers. We got 6 chicks last year as our flock is old and not laying. Currently getting 6-7 eggs a day from 9 hens.
Used to go to a local University (Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo) for their annual tomato plant sale. It's a two day sale and the crowds are insane. Five thousand plants that will sell out in a couple of hours. It's like the black Friday sales of old, people line up hours before they open. We're selling walnuts like crazy from our commercial orchard. Last year was first year we sold out before next crop was ready and that was September. At the rate we're going we'll be out by June. I did all my soil prep 6 months ago. With all the soil amendment I did, should be a good year. Our dog that ate all tbe snap peas died, so I will try those again this year.
My wife planted tomatoes for her mother in Texas. I will need to get to work here. Thursday will maybe be nursery day

![]() Went out cruisin' for chicks this morning and scored 5 ! Barred Rocks, not my first choice, but all that was available within 50 miles. On Sunday Tractor Supply told me to call first thing Monday to see if they got any chicks in. Nope, no layers and they may not get any more this year.
