Armed citizens and the police:

What can possibly go wrong? My friend's wife allegedly pointed a gun at cops in her backyard, (or next door neighbor's backyard), during a chaotic chase of fleeing suspects from a hit-and-run collision on the freeway. Absolutely none of it makes a lot of sense but here we are. Sirens blaring, helicopter overhead, one of the suspects apparently wound up in her yard and she drew down on him, then accidentally pointed the gun at police and got shot by them... just winged, luckily.

Now she is in county jail, charged with attempted murder of a police officer. She may have fired a round in their direction, it's unclear as hell at this point. The charges will be drastically reduced, I predict.

Still, could have had a much worse outcome with her or a cop dead. I've often thought about this exact scenario, it happens all the time here wrt cops chasing people through yards, etc.

Your friends w Weezer bassist?

Steve Carlton 04-10-2025 09:02 AM

Speedy knows a lot of celebrities.

She had a gun on her in her back yard, or her neighbor's back yard? I got to believe her pointing a gun at a cop was accidental. It'll be interesting to see how the facts come out- hopefully there's some camera footage from the cops.

That's a nice flex! A bit of a double flex, really. A little bit of 'bury the lede'!

(And, yeah, what Denis said about armed citizens and the current situation; not great. Not likely to get better, either)

vash 04-10-2025 09:12 AM

Can you ask if they are still performing at Coachella this weekend? :)

Cajundaddy 04-10-2025 09:27 AM

Basic rules with firearms:
"Never point a gun at someone unless you plan to use it"
"A police officer must assume that if you are pointing a gun at them, you do plan to use it"

No time to weigh their options at that stage of the game. Hesitate and you will likely die. Sorry for your friend's predicament but if she is confirmed to have pointed a gun and possibly fired a round at a police officer, this is not going to end happily for her. Zero tolerance, even in LA.

That article claims that she "shot at" one of the suspects after seeing him in her yard. If that's an accurate description, that doesn't sound good.

I'm all for self defense. Getting into the middle of a police chase, even in your own yard, seems like a bad idea.

It's certainly possible that there was more going on than reported. An armed man threatening here or a neighbor, or trying to get into a house? Yeah, he needs to get shot.

I hope she's Ok and doesn't end up with charges.

Early facts don't look good.

Since way before he was in Weezer, which is since 2002 maybe? He and 4 other guys I know were in the worst gig on planet earth together, they were on the road as Vanilla Ice's band in his heavy metal phase in the late '90s or around 2000. I schit you not.

All four moved onto much better gigs with Scott landing in Weezer, just an incredible "right place at right time" situation. They haven't had a lot of line up changes. He is an amazingly good person, former Marine and blue collar guy who was a roadie for a long time and paid his dues 3x over before Weezer. She is also a wonderful person.

The online comments are great !! Someone must have destroyed her sweater ... Say it aint so ..
Good thing no one was seriously hurt .

vash 04-10-2025 11:06 AM

Yea. My Coachella comment was in fun. Hope this resolves quickly one way or another.

It'll be interesting to hear final details. I wouldn't be surprised if the police were beyond her field of view and she just heard someone yelling at her. Of course coming out of your house with gun in hand is rarely a good idea.

BTW, wife and I were in the city (Houston) to see 3 Irish tenors several years ago. At the bar before the show our regular bartender asked if we were there to see Weezer. Since we're both dressed well, it seemed like an odd conclusion on his part but they were playing the arena directly behind the bar. Halfway through the 3 tenors, I was asleep. Wife asked if we should go and I replied yes... but. She said, you want to see Weezer don't you :) I said YES! We bought tickets, sat down 5 minutes before they hit the stage and saw a great show! She feel asleep halfway through the show and still refers to it as the time we saw Weasel :D

Rarely a good idea, always a Constitutional Right

This is attempted murder on an LEO in California.

There were probably 5 officers shouting contradictory instructions at the time, if history is to be any sort of a guide.

At least they did not kill her

If there are cops in the back yard engaging a perp, go inside! And go to the far end of the house in case bullets start flying.

gregpark 04-10-2025 02:44 PM

Cops don't like non cops to have guns and she will be charged because judges feel the same way. (They all figure the hell with the second amendment!). And she was pointing a gun in the general direction of cops (the biggest no no)
Edit
Just read the article, she ignored repeated orders to drop the weapon. She's screwed. The only good news for her is the cop was a lousy shot

This might actually make it higher since it’s someone with status.

As for the hit-and-run crash, one of the three suspects was detained, cited and released by California Highway Patrol.

Saw this on the news this morning. It was suggested she possibly could not hear the officer's commands due to the helicopter traffic over the scene at the time. If you have a firearm and the police start paying attention to you dropping it is probably your best option.

The video of one of the hit & run perps in his fancy panties water the lawn to "blend" in like it was his house was priceless... "Pay no mind to me, just talking on the phone and watering my backyard grass in my underwear"... Pretty genius for such a dumb ass...

A generally awful situation. :( I hope justice prevails.
