The dumbest part of the real ID process is my passport alone was not enough to get the real ID driver's license. She cut the corner off of the old license and let us have them as a great portrait.

I can't think of a better form of identification than a US passport. We had to bring a utility bill with our names on them. Now all my utilities are paid automatically with a bank draft, and they just send an email and I don't get an analog bill. It seems we had to bring some other paperwork as well. It was a 5 minute process, and the new license was mailed to our house. They can't yet make them on the spot. The security and anti-counterfeiter parts are kinda cool.
