No choice in Florida, we went to RealId drivers licenses ages ago

I had to renew my regular DL about a month ago so I did it online. Very convenient.

However, in all the info and the instructions and whatnot not one mention was made of the deadline quickly approaching for the Real ID. About a week later I get a notice telling me about the Real ID deadline and that I can get one for $9. It also advised that it is free if you apply for a real ID at the time of renewal.

So I go in to the DMV to see if I can get a real ID because just days earlier I renewed my license without the Real ID BS.

Nope. $9, please. Had the lady behind the counter not been so cute I would have yelled at her about what a POS our governor is for not automatically telling people the real ID is FREE upon renewal. Instead I calmly advised her that this crap is exactly why the people of Michigan don’t trust the government. The lady said, yeah, it’s the principle. No, I said, it’s the 9 dollars! Nobody expects the government to know anything about principles.

Total scam!

During Covid, NC was issuing both ... regular was even online :(.

I asked 'em how they did an "eye test" ...

My wife and I both got our DL renewed and Real Id. Total cost ZERO. Over 65 in Oklahoma and DL is free and good for 8 years.

Took 15 minutes. Received it in less than a week. Simple procedure.

I dont understand why anyone wouldnt get a Real ID. I like to have options to travel, even if I dont ever use it. And it should reduce the use of fake IDs.

NC was a hassle when I renewed my DL (for Real ID... I don't think I had docs).

I wuz planning on flying wif Taylor anyways :D

I have a passport and a passport card, CA just went to mandatory on it, right after I renewed

NM was its usual unreasonably difficult self. Replacing my non-starred DL for a RealID was no different/easier than applying for a new one. I thought it would be trivial to roll up with my old ID and my passport.

Birth cert was the first demand, though they did take my passport. TWO documents proving residency, or at least some official-ish looking things with my name and address. They also wanted something like a W-2 with my name on it. A 1099 wasn't sufficient, nor would have been my household's 2023 tax return.

It took me three visits to get the stinking thing...

I don't travel without my passport anyway, so I wonder why I was even bothering.

Similar hoops here... Passport had expired & I had none of what they required ... nada. I'm good ....
