Oops! I almost missed my exit.
Oblivious to what he just caused.

I've been at that exit many times. With a lot of exits and required lane changes there is a lot going on in that area. Going north is worse than coming down from the north. Columbus is a mess, it's got big-city traffic right in the middle of rural Ohio.
Ohio used to plant wildflowers in the median of some highways. Years ago, some woman was killed when she stopped on I-70 west of Columbus to look at the flowers. I don't recall all the details, what happened to the car/cars that hit her but apparently her passenger survived. |
Worst interchange in the country is in Houston

Not oblivious, just fled the scene of an accident.
****ing *******. Should i be typing this in Hatian Creole? |
I've seen videos of that sort of thing many times. I've seen videos where a car comes to a complete stop, waits for a "clear" spot, and then takes off with a multicar pile up happening in the background. It's mind boggling, and these folks that do this crap shouldn't be allowed to drive.

One of the biggest things I harped on when teaching my kids to drive on the freeway was not to dive over to catch an exit you are going to miss. Just go to the next one. This is an extreme version of that. What an idiot. Hopefully they can pile up some charges and make him/her pay.

I'll be the devil's advocate here and place the blame on whoever was driving the silver van.
Very light traffic. Two other drivers managed to stop in plenty of time. They were probably actually looking out their windshields. You know, like we are supposed to be doing while driving at speed on the freeway. I bet whoever was driving the silver van was not looking out their windshield. I bet they were on their cell phone, texting, checking maps, or some other such distraction. They had plenty of time and space to avoid hitting the other car, as demonstrated by those two other drivers, and by how long after they had stopped that it took the silver van to appear in the frame. I would be citing that driver. If I were an injured party in one of the other cars, I would be suing that driver in addition to the red van driver. Oh, and they should be getting busted as well, for all of the reasons others have already enumerated. |

So in this situation you have one complete dumbaß and someone else that was driving while distracted. What that means was that this was completely avoidable and due to neglegence on the part of multiple folks. |
Is it forseeable that stopping dead on a highway has a good likelihood of causing an accident?
|
A "reasonable man" would expect that to happen.
Person who stopped caused it, silver van has the liability though. |

We often see things laying stationary in the freeway. Entire semi truck retread carcasses come to mind as probably the most common. I've also seen loads of lumber, furniture, and other such debris. It's important to be on the lookout for these things. The stopped red van was merely the most obvious offender. Pretty easy to focus on that and ignore the role played by the inattentive idiot in the silver van. Just look at how many drivers successfully avoided all of that, both before and after the collision. |
I was recently driving down the freeway in the fast lane when the car in front me slammed on it's brakes and came to a complete stop, in order to take the exit. Just like in the video. Somehow I stopped in time and no one hit me. Then she exited when it was clear. It could have been very bad. How do these people get a driver's license?

Anyway, back to the matter at hand. The Seattle area now has the highest auto insurance rates in the country, in large part due to behaviors such as that exhibited by this driver. We have no shortage of drivers doing just this, along with a plethora of similar actions. Merging into 70 mph traffic at 30 mph. Driving at half the speed of traffic, leading those behind them to try to dart into a much faster moving lane to try to get around them. Granted, much of our increased accident rate is due to our absolutely crushing traffic, but something else has changed along the way. There are two kinds of really bad driving that will cause others problems. One is pretty obvious - the overly aggressive speeders, tailgaters, those weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed. The other end of that spectrum is the overly slow, overly "polite" drivers who just won't do their part and get with the program. The ones who appear to be terrified and confused. I see more of these than the former these days. I put the driver of the red van in this category. |

Picking the flowers for her funeral....sad. . |
Every Latin American knows that the correct thing to do when you miss your exit is to back up the on-ramp.

I drive 210 miles every day for work. I see the same, stupid, idiotic, clueless drivers, almost causing accidents every day. Someday, they will be part of the accident, but for now many of them just mow along, not knowing of the mayhem around them.
Today, I was driving at 60 miles an hour, the speed limit, and came up on a car going 40 miles an hour. As I passed, it looked like an older woman driving the car, who wasn’t comfortable behind the wheel. I see the incompetent and the uncomfortable behind the wheel every day. I don’t know how they make it in life? |
