my wife loves to eat fish. especially from the ocean. and I live right next to it.

my wife asked why I dont kayak into the ocean. hmmm.. I went with the easy one. "oh, I dont have a marine walkie talkie." I think it is a safety requirement.

I chit you not. yesterday, I was dozing on the couch with the wife and my dog lets out that "huff" he does when someone comes to the door. I was..Amazon? my wife goes, "oh that's for you". huh?

the woman ordered me a Marine radio. hahah.. she looked at my search history and found the one I kept coming back to . nothing expensive, but meets the requirements. (thanks China!!). now this week, I hit the store store buy a new rod/reel combo. hahha..

my excuse should have been, "sharks. sharks honey..I dont go into the ocean because of sharks"

whatever. I am going this upcoming weekend. Rockfish. Pacific Ocean, but only if the winds are favorable, and tides..the tides matter.

lets do this!! there is a robust kayak community and as I understand it, the ocean will have many many kayakers out there. even coming back into the beach, complete strangers will meet you at water's edge to help you get out. if a shark bumps my kayak, at least my YouTube channel will blow up. :D

I was similarly anxious about going out into big lakes. I got over it.

You'll enjoy the ocean. I sold my kayak some years ago because I moved farther away from the ocean and didn't use it. I never fished from it, but the thing I really enjoyed was surfing with it along with the exercise. Give surfing a try. The most important thing to know is to lean way back when trying to catch a wave. The bigger the wave, the farther back you have to lean. You can use your paddle as a rudder. You may find yourself going out just for that some times. Have fun.

Always check wind conditions, you are 1/3 hp on a good day.

Don't get over it too much...but it doesn't sound like you would. Familiarity breeding contempt and all that.

Had my canoe w/ trolling motor 1.2 miles out into the gulf two weeks ago, tied up to a channel marker and sat and fished for a while....

Can be done easily - some days, the gulf looks like a flat pond. Last weekend there were 1-2 foot waves with whitetops so I stayed in the sheltered bays/coves

Where would go Vash? I know you are up in Marine with many great lakes but ocean are plenty. I really like to Kayak Tamales when I was up there. The bay keeps the big wind and wave under control, sometimes.

I have an ocean touring kayak and have been out there but dislike the big waves. It tosses me around too much. If its fishing, can you retrofit a small trolling motor just to get you home in those beat tired days. Rock fish and bass are plenty if you know where to fish them. I haven't fished in over 30 years. Tagged along as a kid during summers often.

You could always stay closer to shore and fly fish the surf. Barred Perch, Corbina, etc. Me and lowyder993 went fishing in Ventura.

Double check the fish and game laws so you don't get ticketed. Down here we had a moratorium on rock fish and cod.

Great fishing up in Venture. We use to go out from the harbor during those college years and catch a boat load of rock fish during late autumn. Cold is all I can say and the waves were big out in that big ocean.

Jigging deep for Rock Cod, the long slow reel up and they'd come up with stomachs blown out.

Vash, you probably know this but keep in mind VHF radio's are good for line of sight transmission, you are pretty low in a kayak.

We need to get Vash one of those triangular orange flags that we used to put on bicycles in the 70s. Then he could mount an antenna on top. Dual purpose, increased visibility and better revolution!

Yep, did a bit of that during winter with 10 foot swells up there. Those were rough days. 2 lbs weight straight down. Yeah, eye balls, stomachs, on all 5-6 of 'em cranking it forever. 6-800' was not uncommon. Fun times.
