Flat Tire!

Yesterday morning me and my boys took off in my Land Cruiser to do some fishing. The lake is way up right now and so our usual spot was too flooded to fish so we were driving over to another spot when…ka-BLAM…the rear tire blows out. We immediately pull into a subdivision and the giant 35” tire was completely flat. Rather than try and change it with the factory jack, I had my GF come get us and take us home where I loaded some tools in my 4Runner and went back and changed it. It only took about 15 minutes. I get the thing home and found out why the tire went flat…see below. The first one was me trying to pull out whatever punctured the tire and the second is my boy holding it when I finally got it out. A freaking disk brake pad!!! It was 7” long x 2.5” wide x .188" thick and completely destroyed the tire. My front tire must have kicked it up off the road and it went straight into my rear tire...

Wow!

Any damage to the rim?
Years ago I bought a VW that came with BBS rims. The one in the trunk had a hole in the barrel of the rim, likely from hitting something similar. Maybe the fact you had 35s on saved the rim.

The sad part is, the idiot driving around with the missing brake pad doesn't even know it is gone, from the looks of that backing plate they've been metal-to-metal for quite a while. There's a reddit site called justrolledintotheshop www.reddit.com/r/justrolledintotheshop where you see stuff like that all the time.

The wheel is OK visually from the outside, but the tire is still mounted. These are the factory Toyota 16 x 8 wheels and they are pretty tough.

My dilemma now is that I am running 315/75-16 Goodyear Duratracs and they don't make that size any longer so will need to figure out what to do. I have (had) five of them and was doing a 5-tire rotation, so even though they have 32k miles on them they have a lot of life left.

And...315/75-16s are a fortune these days.

Wild! I have seen a few thrown brake pads over the years. It's not supposed to happen but...

As for the tires I would just run the 4 good ones and get a similar spare for the rare flat tire incident. The spare just needs to get you safely to a tire shop.

Not that it matters, but it looks like a factory late-ish model GM pad

Wow! That would belong in the jar at most tire stores for most uncommon thing found in a tire. I mean, that seems like really bad luck!

And on a side note: I wonder what the driver who lost that is stopping with now?

Crazy!!

Side note. Have you tried lifting vehicle wOEM jack? W 35’s, is it still possible?

Exactly! I think the factory jack would lift it high enough to get the flat tire off, but not the spare back on again. So, I have a Hi-Lift jack (mounted on my bumper with my spare) - I could have used that. But given the fact that I was 10 minutes from my house I opted for the comfort of my 3 ton floor jack and battery-powered impact wrench. ;)

I think I would opt for a same size tire of any brand, hang it on the back and take it out of rotation. Maybe hunt FBM, Craigslist, Used tire stores or whatever and see what you might find.

Or just mount a 40 series tire on the wheel, hang it on the back, call it a day. I know there's a picture of a Jeep out there somewhere with that setup, but I can't find it.

Edit: Found it, or at least a thumbnail.

Wow that's quite the piece of shrapnel !!! Many years ago my wife came home and said the car is making a thumping noise :( . So I go out and start running my hands around the tires . Found it :D . She had run over a giant serving fork . The kind of fork you use for like turkey at Thanksgiving . It pierced the tread but not the tire ! I pulled it out and no leak . Hit it with soapy water no bubbles .

It was just a go to work car driving less than 10 miles each way . So I upped her life insurance :p and said you're good to go :D .

Wow!!!
I recently installed a new front wheel bearing on my Mother-in-law's 2006 Malibu. When I was removing the brake caliper, one of the brake pads fell apart!!! I had never seen brake pad material separate from the backing plate like that before and the brake pads still had a lot of material on them and didn't need replacing until that happened.

That is very impressive.

Better yet, good thing it didn't get kicked up and fly into a windshield. I had a similar size piece of metal go into my windshield years ago. I should be dead.

I thought it was a pair of vice grips, stuck in the tire until I saw the brake pad. Who loses the brake pad and keeps driving!

Por_sha911 05-20-2025 02:14 PM

Glad it didn't cause you to have an accident.

One question: who does car repairs in the garage wearing only socks?

LJ851 05-20-2025 03:01 PM

Whoever owned that brake pad got their moneys worth out of it !

Tobra 05-20-2025 04:37 PM

We should have a craziest thing to give you a flat tire. I had a house key do it one time.

That is not technically working in the garage, that is going out to the driveway to pull the "WTF is that" out of the tire for the amusement of the internet.

I knew a gal once. Only stopped driving once the piston popped out.

I had a piece of glass out on Tybee do me in for my last flat.
