Another useless burden to society
That's me. After 28 years at the current job, and a few before that, I'm done.
Turned in my security badge and keys, wiped my profile from my laptop and turned that in as well. Here's hoping I don't get the "how do you fix this again" call in the future, I spent the last 6 months trying to pass on my knowledge. I'm not sure what I'll do just yet. I might start with practicing more with the guitar. |
Congrats pal! Well deserved, keep busy doing what you like and don’t look back.

I retired in March - enjoy deciding what to do with all that extra time!

And if you foresee them calling you in to help fix something, form a LLC, and charge them double or triple or more for your time as a consultant. In Oklahoma forming an LLC is very inexpensive, (under $100). The LLC will pay no taxes, it all is paid by you. Oh, and you will need a EIN from the IRS. That is free. You will have to file a tax form for the LLC, but no taxes, they all pass to you. |

Here’s something that becomes apparent: you can’t get any more time in your week.
When you were working 40 hours a week and you had a project you needed to get done, you could take a couple days off of work to get it done. Bingo, 16 extra hours! You have all the hours now and can’t get more! |

So when I got the calls, I returned them and answered the questions without expecting anything. Now if they wanted me to come in and spend any considerable amount of time, I would have asked for compensation. I got a call literally the first day after I left and one or two in the next month or so and another at the end of the year for help on filling out an annual report. Even got a call from a contractor who wanted clarification on a budget item that had been approved. |
Some may see me as a burden on society. But I rather see myself as some sort of saint who receives money, in the form of a pension, from the tax payers then redistributes it around bars and restaurants.

Rock on rockfan! It just keeps getting better. |
Get a big TV and comfy recliner. You'll get there eventually anyway, may as well get a head start on it.
|
I'm trying to avoid the recliner and TV, although some days my back says that's all we're going to do. I bought this TV in 2011, I think I got my money's worth out of it.
The old workplace had a reward program, and upon retirement they gave me enough points for $400 worth of Guitar Center gift cards. Lots of other choices, but that's what I wanted. So I've got that burning a hole in my pocket. I watched that video, and I can't really enjoy Phase I until my wife retires, and that's about 5 years from now. I'm hoping I don't fall into Phase II waiting on Phase I. She is taking a couple weeks next spring for a trip to Arizona. I've got a bunch of cousins I haven't seen in 50 years. The oldest kept in touch with my mother, but I haven't contacted any of them. I was going to post this in the Western thread, but I didn't realize Old Tucson had a fire back in the 90's. Ended up closing during Covid but has since reopened. I'd like to go back for a visit but I'm thinking I'll be disappointed. In the 70's we also took a day trip to Nogales, but I'm guessing we won't do that this time. |

No advice - you'll figure it out. The important part is now you will have time for yourself....instead of someone else. That is invaluable! Enjoy! SmileWavy |
