OK, so what is this Hawk?

This hawk landed on our back fence. He or she was not there long, and I had to shoot through a window and a screen to get this with my iPhone

https://avibirds.com/hawks-in-oklahoma/

Here is a link to the hawks of Oklahoma. Some are easy to say, not that one. Some are maybes.

We had a pair of Mississippi Kites nesting near our house. This hawk is much larger.

So what is your best guess, or if you just know, please let me know.

That looks like a red shouldered hawk to me.

They tend to have the chest/breast that's mostly rufus, and in the photo, that appears to extend over to the shoulder.

Coopers Hawk.

KFC911 06-06-2025 11:19 AM

Lots if hawks around here ... but none like that ... awesome!

Since I have never heard of a Cooper's Hawk, great pull:cool:

Looks like their heads and wings are fairly solidly colored which does not seem to be the case with the bird in the photo.

But the red shouldered hawk's wings, face/cheeks, chest, etc... seem to fit better

My ambo got strafed by a red-tailed hawk today.

Based on the chart above, I'm changing my vote to Red Shouldered hawk as well. Bodies are very close, but the wings are the give away.

We have had a road runner hang out for two weeks before it moved on. We had a wild turkey hen in the area for a couple of days.

Right now we are overloaded with new baby toads. Some the size of a house fly. Lots of tadpoles in the pond, and soon more baby toads. The Koi eat a lot of the tadpoles, but the numbers of tadpoles is more than the fish can eat. It has been a toad orgy in out pond.

Lots of squirrels in the area for the hawks.

You seem them here quite a bit in Ohio. They are smaller, and can thrive on backyard hunting, so you seem them more than larger hawks.

That was my 1st thought. They are about 25% smaller than a Redtail, and very boisterous. There are a nesting pair somewhere near by me cause I see them on the daily, and they do a ton of squawking while in flight.

masraum 06-06-2025 06:08 PM

We have a bunch of red shouldered and red tailed hawks around here. I see them every day, but then I'm in a very rural area.

I've also seen a road runner, but it was only once. We came home, when I got out of the car to open the gate he was very close to the gate and then ran down the property. Very cool.

Regardless of what type of hawk it is look at those talons ! A rodent doesn't have a chance against those killers . Great photo .

Yeah, Red Shouldered hawk. The barred breast AND wings give it away. The Coopers doesn't have barred wings.

Red shoulder, different eye color than a Coopers

It is interesting in that their are a lot of small aerial predators in my area but the Ospreys and Eagles keep them off the farm for the most part.

Beautiful.

I wouldn't think that Ospreys would concern themselves with small raptors much since they eat two different things (fish vs little mammals, etc...). But maybe the big birds don't like the idea of the little birds around their babies. Or maybe it's just a flex, "this yard isn't big enough for the both of us," and the little birds high tail it out of there.

And I wouldn't think eagles would be concerned about any other bird other than another eagle. I'll never forget watching the juvenile snag a duck out of a pond, stand on it for a couple of mins, and then fly off with it like it was nothing.

We have this pair hanging around here, I always thought they were Red-Tailed Hawks, but now after reviewing the posted photos I don't think so. Any opinions on what variety of hawk they might be? Photo taken here on the far north side of Charlotte. Lots of cover and tall trees around.

I'm just on my phone so the picture is small, but first glance that looks like red shouldered hawks.

Thanks! Makes sense now that I noticed the red shoulder on one of the hawks! (and no red tail feathers).
