A friend of mines father died so I was offered this stick welder. I’m not even sure it works. Was this a junk piece back in its day or pretty good I guess is the question.
Not sure if I should put any effort into it.

It was the welder in every farm shop back in the day. I only used one for a short tome before switching to a Miller MIG.

Yup. Pretty standard equipment right there. I have the more modern version that I use sometimes.

AC only so you need to buy AC rod. There are a few choices, but for down and dirty (really, a little rust and paint) get some 6011 or 6013. They are mean and nasty rods that penetrate while trying to stick all the time. It takes getting used to.

For building up on clean work you can use 7018 but since that needs to be newish and kept warm, I don't use much 7018. It's an industry standard for a cap pass or 3. Runs nice.

If you get some 7028, that is the AC equivalent of 7024 "jet rod" a high deposition shallow weld that runs like butter and makes you look better than you are. Easy to start and run, you can almost just drag it in the weld and it welds all by itself, no manipulation required. With good clean prep it can be strong. Flat welding position only but I doubt you are going to do much overhead welding with that machine. The others I mentioned are all position.

If you learn to lay down a decent bead using 6011 with a Lincoln Tombstone, you can weld just about anything anywhere. Try not to overshoot the amps. Yes, it makes it easier to light up an arc, but too hot will get you in trouble soon enough. Dial it back a bit and be smooth. 75 and 90 is about all you'll ever need unless you need to build your own steel bridge.

I worked at a welding supply shop in the early 1990's. Those were everywhere. My Dad still has his - he is 88.

Many a weld came off these looking like birdpoop. That is NOT how a good weld looks. Strive to have your weld look like a stack of nickels.

Thanks. I grabbed for my son. He’s works as a welder so I’ve been collecting tools if we want to do anything on the side. He seems to like it considering it’s been over a year and he never complains about it. He has a MIG already, figured this can’t hurt. Hopefully he’ll get trained on TIG soon.

He had no idea......and was even less interested when I told him.

Hell yeah, a Lincoln "Tombstone" we have one sitting in our shop (for nostalgia) but it can still be put to work if ever needed.

The copper inside it is worth keeping it ! I inherited a grey buzzbox when my dad passed . I haven't used it in 20 years but it does still fire up . I remember as a youngin :D welding Jeep frames as we had a fleet of three . I am pretty sure mine was built in the 60's . I keep it for sentimental reasons as I have oxy/acetylene and mig for the jobs I do .

With that patina, it would look great in the right restaurant or bar.

my college welder was the exact same unit if I remember it correctly.

I sucked on it, but I managed. not bad for a Civil Eng major. haha.. our mini Baja team was lead by a Mech-E, but the rest of the team was all CE's. we were Motörheads. the team leader had to be a ME..thems the rules.
