Is the intent for people to walk in and out under that door?

That is not the entrance to the shop but it is frequently open and vehicles, equipment and people pass under it. It is always locked with the chain in whatever position it is opened to.

Interesting as there must be literally hundreds of thousands of industrial roll up doors open for human access every day. Just Costco has over 600 stores in the US with 2 doors at the main entrance. Add in the "lumber" entrance to any big box stores and the count rises.

So where is this "not allowed?"

Second question, as it's been a long while since I've operated one of these, do they have dedicated safety stops that need to be released at the point of closing the door? A quick Google shows that this is a topic of concern and there are available devices to qualify a door as a people entrance.

Here in CA there are a LOT of earthquake specific codes. I hadn't given any thought to several hundred to a thousand+ lbs. hanging in the air over pedestrian traffic. In commercial settings CalOSHA is actually a PITA. I'm sure they've given this some thought.

It must have some kind of spring inside because it takes the same effort to raise or lower it. One finger will do it...its balanced well.

The drum weighs close to 100 lbs. I had to rig up ropes to make sure that it didn't drop when installing it. (I know 100 lbs. is nothing compared to a full roll-up door)
