Spinal Tap II. I'm not sure what to think.

I've seen ads and trailers; spend 15 bucks at the theatre to get great sound?

Or, maybe not. This isn't helping. If this is an indication of what to expect, it feels like the movie might just be a lazy cash grab.

You're probably not wrong about the lazy cash grab, but surely there is a lot of material for too old to rock and roll metal band jokes.

What other possible reason could there be to do a sequel? See Happy Gilmore 2 for reference.

I know, but Christopher Guest has set a very high bar. His movies are usually really good - clever, witty, fun. (For Your Consideration maybe the exception)

Maybe that video bothers me more than it should.

Oh man, great example! Good thing I was drinking when I watched that movie because there’s no way I could handle it sober. As a child of the ‘80s I’m starting to feel like Hollywood is lazily pandering to my generation with a bunch of half-assed sequels to make me nostalgic. I’m not a fan at all.

If they can make money off it, I'm okay with that. But I'm not interested. I was never a fan of that kind of music, but I think the movie was great.

At least they got the correct size stones this time.

I am 59. My entire generation thinks it is AMAZING.

It never really grabbed me. And, I have spent thousands of hours in rock bands.

Too close? No idea. Won't be seeing it. I typically don't care for sequels. And if the first one didn't grab me? Not happening.

Wow. Do I sound fun.

Steve Carlton 07-31-2025 12:45 PM

My favorite of their mockumentaries is Best in Show. If you like dogs, you can't miss.

I’m 45, I recall the movie but it didn’t resonate with me in any way.

Best in Show? Damn. That is funny.

But they used "little people" anyway. Weird. I bet Peter Dinklage was too expensive to reprise his role.

"It's one louder, isn't it?" When Marty asks why not simply make the 10 setting louder, Nigel hesitates before responding: "These go to eleven."

If the sequel can match that level of genius that got a phrase entered into the Oxford Dictionary, maybe I'll watch it.

Steve Carlton 08-01-2025 07:05 PM

The best scene in the movie, IMO.

Spinal Tap is back. Director Rob Reiner says they're still dialed up to 11

Quote:

Spinal Tap, the fictional band at the center of the film, was known for its excesses both on- and off-screen. The bass player stuffed his pants with a foil-wrapped zucchini, while the lead guitarists boasted of amps that "go to 11." Reiner both directed the film and played a documentary director in the movie.

Now, in the sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, the band returns for a reunion concert. As in the original film, the band is portrayed by Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer. Everyone's older in the sequel, but make no mistake: None of the characters has changed.

"The beauty of these guys, the members of Spinal Tap, is that in all those years, from their 20s, 30s up now until their 70s, they have grown neither emotionally or musically," Reiner says. "There's no growth. They basically are in a state of arrested development for, like, 50 years. And the only growth that there is, is maybe skin [tags] from getting older."

Reiner says revisiting the project came easily, especially since it meant working with the same collaborators: "We're still able to — as Chris Guest calls it — 'schnadle' with each other back and forth."

TV Reviews
Rob Reiner celebrates his friend Albert Brooks in a delightful documentary
"After 15 years of not working together, we came back and started looking at this and seeing if we could come up with an idea, and we started schnadling right away," he says. "It was like falling right back in with friends that you hadn't talked to in a long time. It's like jazz musicians, you just fall in and do what you do."
