The ocean eats 9 more houses....
This is being reported as bigly news .... the NC barrier islands move... always have, always will...
This wasn't even newsworthy when I visited the mostly desolate Outer Banks as a kid.... like leaves falling in the fall... I want to skool this bleach blond intern from UNC .... but she is cute.... "Bless her heart..."

As long as the wild horses are OK the rest is just stuff . Building that close to the ocean has risk and sometimes you lose .

It was only a short while ago the houses going in now were well back from the shoreline. More will go in shortly.

Mother nature always wins. Sometimes it's a year, sometimes it's 20. Enjoy it while it lasts.
I've seen abandoned houses consumed by nature in 20 years. A cut field becomes woods in less than 20. When we're gone, our remnants will be consumed and regurgitated for the next occupiers of earth.

I was part of a project in NC where the ocean steadily encroached upon the site boundaries. If we waited a couple years, we wouldn’t have been forced to blow our entire budget on a clean up as it would be all with nature… and by clean up, i mean cement footings and other non hazardous material.

. OBX is the typical tourist trap with housing permits granted for areas there shouldn't be houses . Add to that rising oceans and then storms and it's a recipe for seasonal disaster . The people know it but the allure of big rental $$$ over rides common sense . Greedy plus stupid is a dangerous combination .

OBX .... seeing that makes me cringe ... many trips (ferrys back then) to those remote islands ... there was ZERO access from the north....
One could walk for miles along the beaches and see 6 people fishing .... My last visit was in '97 ... it broke my heart to see what was and HAD happened... then. Knew I'd never return too.... truly "Paradise Lost" ... but not in my memories.... "They turned what was into something so disgusting, even wild dogs would disregard the bones" - DBT GOML  It is still an awesome place ... but "OBX" and touristy $$$. Sooooo.... all of you guys ... GOMOBX !
