Times are changing

Just watched this about England's fish & chips shops closing, Clarkson has said the same for pubs in the last season of C's Farm.

And I heard on Bloomberg the other day that AI is taking the place of entry level programmers.

Have you seen anything like this in another sector? I wish fish & chips shops had caught on here but they'd be already gone by now given the cost increases.

As somebody that used to travel to the UK frequently for work, I never got the fish and chips thing. Sorta felt like the UK did way better selling the food from other cultures, because theirs was generally crap.

Changes in the way things are done? Businesses closing because of changing markets? Every day. We tend to think things will always be the way they are right now, but logic and history says otherwise.

Yes, healthcare has gone to hell in the last 10 or 15 years.

I think I am the last one that gives a ***** about his patients.

New Zealand is a fish 'n chips country.

Yep, they have become a little more expensive, but it's an easy way to have a meal. I kind of like having fish and chips with a vino at the beach on a Friday night.

Alcohol consumption in the US is way down . I can imagine that trend is all over the world . We are more health conscious and there is the cost . So if you are a bar/restaurant and your big margin $$$ is alcohol sales you may struggle . Tough business to be in .

Some bars are closing here. The young kids buy cheap alcohol from the supermarket then do pre-loaders or pre's as they call them before going to a bar. Then they spend the whole evening there with one drink.

The club scene kids are into drugs, so go to a nightclub dance away for the night and don't buy a drink. Only drink is the free water.

Fried fish, or “fish fries” are part of the culture here upstate NY. I get em probably one a week, usually Friday. This Saturday my parents are coming over for some fried fish takeout from the place I prefer

Here is last Friday

Off topic, the other day I went to the grocery to get food for dinner. Had nothing in particular in mind. Browsed the beef section and holy moly the prices! Didn’t feel like chicken or pork. Hmm, fish? Got a big beautiful fillet of mahi mahi for $8/lb, cheaper than the crappiest ground beef.

Wonder how the food cost of a hamburger is looking next to the food cost of fish and chips?

Now that I am unwillingly plugged into the system, I tend to agree.

Mahi Mahi is rare in these parts, a new fish market opened up the street from me, I'll go in today and see what they have. $8/lb is cheap for any fish that isn't tilapia or low quality farmed salmon.

Love me some Doug's in Skaneateles.

Maybe it is me. Maybe food is better where I live? But fish and chips in UK and NZ were pretty unimpressive. It could be I need more flavor in my food? Because I LOVE fish and chips when done to my taste.

One of the biggest disappointments going to the UK. The other? I seemed to find the worst Indian food in London.

The best Indian food in London could be where I ate, The India. I became a minor celebrity with the staff by ordering enough for 4 people, and cleaning every plate. Having been to India (the country) many times, I can say this was truly excellent.

Doug’s is THE place to go for fish fry in Skaneateles, NY. He started out serving hamburgers in a small place on Thompson Road, just up a way from Carrier. We’d go for lunch grab a couple burgers, a drink for a couple bucks. He was selling horse meat for awhile, but I never tried that. Had a place in East Syracuse for a couple years, but closed it and opened in Skaneateles. Doug passed, and one of his longtime managers owns it now. Wife and I would take a drive out there, stop at Doug’s, sit by the lake, enjoy the day. Place was always crowded, but line moved along quickly. It’s the best!
