Volvo headlights restoration

The headlights on our Volvo XC90 were looking tired . I bought a Cerakote kit and went to work this morning . The instructions say to sand with each grit for 2-3 minutes , I sanded for about 20 each . I am very happy with the results .

Looking good.
My only gripe is that on my lamps, the job wouldn't last very long- 6mo- 1 year at most.

I got to the point I just hit em' with 3m heavy grit compound and a buffing wheel every couple of months...

And on one volvo, bought new lenses- expensive, but worked long term. Can't do that on all the cars though, specially the ones with the exspensive turning internal lamps.

Grrr... Oh well.

Looking good, Billy Ray!

Did the kit come with a sealer?

There is a discussion of micro plastics on another forum I'm on. Glass was better. Good quality lamps behind glass is the answer.

Does look good, Richard.

My first Volvo was a Bertone coupe. Headlamps were glass, heavy as hell, but needed zero maintenance except for changing the bulbs. I pulled a lamp out to change the bulb and dropped it, cracked the lens in half. I tried to get a replacement lens through Volvo scrap yards, nada. So I siliconed the glass halves together and they held until I sent the car down the road. That was a fun car to drive. A flying brick…

Yes . The kit contains.
1.two pair of gloves
2.six packaged cleaning wipes which are step one.
3.small palm sander with velcro and two 2000 and 3000 grit sanding disc's. That is step two.
4.two clear coat wipes . That is step three .

For 20 bucks and some elbow grease I am happy . We bought this car used years ago it came out of Florida . That is where the majority of sun damage happened . It is now parked in a garage so the only exposure is when driving or parked . Will be interesting to see how long it lasts .

Thanks Milt . Unfortunately that's what we have to deal with on " modern " vehicles . I agree on glass being superior .

Google says the ceramic coating in the Cerakote kit is very good. Cerakote warranties it for as long as you own the car, but only for a new kit or refund. Apparently, keeping the headlights free of contaminants helps the longevity.

Yeah the little bit of research I did said the Cerakote kit was a good one . I did notice the lifetime warranty on the box . We shall see 👀

I was just kidding. My Volvo has lenses made of glass, so no issues with yellow/fogging.

Probably need to do the Silverado's though.......

It's 2025.... You'd think we could make a plastic that wouldn't degrade.

Cars look so bad with fogged lights, but the sad part is when you replace or refurbish them your car looks like it is supposed to rather than a better looking car.
