I bought a fixer upper ten years ago and am coming to terms with the fact that the fixer part is never going to end. So I get the trouble free apartment life idea.
But the house is mine. In California the landlord saw me a a cow to be milked. The government saw me a a cow to be milked. The industry saw me as a cow to be milked. The very rich don’t seem to care and the poor aren’t targets. Those of us in between leave if we ever want to accumulate wealth.

P.S.
I lived in a two bedroom, hardwood floors, pool, twenties ,deco building in the flats of Hollywood. I had to step over needles and human **** going in and out. But the cost of living in a “nice” neighborhood was worse. And the nice neighborhoods always seemed full of eloi waiting for the morlocks.
