Aussie shark attack

Possibly most horrifying attack I’ve read about due to the surfers screams -

Damn, what a terrible way to go.

Alan A 09-07-2025 03:54 PM

It’s a bit callous. But did he think the shark was listening?

My last words would most likely be along the lines of well that’s me ****ed then, or even simpler, ow that hurts so I’m not pretending I could do better.

masraum 09-07-2025 04:46 PM

That sucks. When it's your time....

berettafan 09-07-2025 05:02 PM

I guess I’ve thought of a shark gets me I’ll think ok just need to control the bleeding cause he’s just investigating. This guy apparently knew darn well he was being eaten. Poor soul!

sc_rufctr 09-07-2025 05:42 PM

Freekin awful and it'll be swimming season soon.

When we were kids, fearless! Not now. :(

If your biggest fears are being eaten by an animal and drowning, this would be a two-fer.

Perhaps the Aussies can invite the South African killer whales that have a taste for shark liver?

unclebilly 09-07-2025 08:37 PM

Maybe M21Sniper was onto something…

The Synergizer 09-07-2025 08:37 PM

Sharks, bears, pit bulls, alligators, salt water crocks....
All avoidable if you just stay home....

Well, maybe not. https://nypost.com/2025/08/30/us-news/mom-of-3-attacked-dragged-100-yards-by-brown-bear-after-stepping-out-of-alaska-home-for-morning-jog/

There have been more than usual recently. NOT a good sign.

fastfredracing 09-08-2025 05:41 AM

Gee thanks. Just strapped my surf board down to my roof last night, leaving for the OBX Thrus night. No way I wont be hearing the Jaws theme while Im out there paddling about .

vash 09-08-2025 01:56 PM

Saturday I put a hook deep into my finger. I yanked it out unceremoniously. It bled a lot, which I imagine was a good thing. Self flushing the wound. I finally applied pressure and I dunked my hand in the pacific to rinse. The plumb of blood drifted off and I immediately heard the Jaws “dah dum…” I’m my head.

I put some distance between me and the spot. :)

Yeah, that's a rule with us surfers. If you get cleaned up on the reef, with blood , you get out of the water right now. Another one is don't go patting dogs before you paddle out.

It doesn't worry me too much as I always feel it's gonna be the other guy who gets it.

Mr Bill, The last time I heard that was back in the 80s.

"Can sharks smell dogs?"

"Yes, sharks can smell dogs because they can smell their bodily fluids in the water, though the primary attraction is likely due to the movement and unusual nature of a dog in their environment, rather than a specific "dog scent" that is appealing as prey. Sharks possess a powerful sense of smell, capable of detecting scents like blood and urine from a distance, and a dog's presence can pique their curiosity, leading them to investigate."

Do they patrol swim beaches in Australia with helicopters or UAVs?

Shaun @ Tru6 09-10-2025 05:24 AM

I was sitting on a surf board in Half Moon Bay on a particularly cloudy dark day, legs dangling in the water. I happened to look down and noticed I couldn't see my foot, or leg beneath my knee. I had this intense thought of a shark coming up from below and chomping my leg off, with no way of seeing it coming. A little while later a good wave came up so it ended well.

Saw some seals on the Cape over labor day weekend, they were a little scary too. Big and unpredictable in their natural environment came to mind.

Yes... All major beaches Australia wide are monitored by air for sharks and other marine life.

Helicopters mostly but they also use light aircraft.

We also have "swim between the flags" and a life guard at the major beaches.
