A car needs to go - Which one?
Certainly a first world problem...
I have a daily driver Volkswagen Alltrack, great daily and all around versatile car. It's staying. I have three others I am very attached to and have owned for many years. They're well sorted and fun to drive. All straight and rust free. But I'm tired of owning four cars and it's time to start trimming down. I have a feeling whatever input I get from the board here I still won't be able to decide: A 2004 BMW 325i 5 speed with a Sport Package. I've owned since new and it's probably the best all around car I've ever owned. Fun to drive, reliable and easy to work on. Parts are starting to get harder to find (quality parts anyway) and much more expensive. 254,000 miles. It's shocking how reliable this car has been. A 1995 Porsche 993, six speed manual. I love this car, a wonderful car to drive and value just keeps going up (which makes me drive it less, I used to drive it to work occasionally but not anymore). 117,000 miles. A 1984 Porsche 3.2 Carrera, Not as in nice a shape as the 993 but a well sorted driver. (lots of rock chips form previous owner) Just spent a crap load reupholstering the sport seats. Much simpler maintenance than the 993, oil changes are a breeze in comparison, classic 911 shape. that's easy, the BMW since it's the closest car to the VW.
Like yours, my 07 328i just hit 270K miles last week. Parts are still easy to get and cheap though. |

Other than the 75k mile 2nd gear awol issue on the trans, the 3.2 911s from teh mid/late 80s are basically bullet proof. On top of that, I think they are in the top 3 or 4 of Porsches to Own Forever.

Personally, I'd sell the AllTrack . . . but otherwise, sell the BMW. It is a good car, I like that gneration of 3-series a lot, but no Porsche, and no matter how well you've cared for it, the mileage is getting up there.

I'm with you on the values taking the fun out. I'd sell one of the 911's as they're very similar cars, I guess the question is whether you prefer driving the g body or the 993.

If money isn’t a factor, it’s the BMW for sure. You already own a four door practical German car that is newer and lower miles, why have two? Meanwhile you can hold two uniquely different 911s that will very likely at a minimum hold their value, if not appreciate.
Also, go drive those things! Sure they have gone up in value, but we aren’t taking $250k either! We live in a world where a new Suburban can sticker at over $100k, in the grand scheme of things 911s aren’t THAT valuable. |
Q for those posting: Why does the value take out the fun?

For a lot of us the greater a car’s value the more cautious we are about how we drive it. Now that my Speedster represents a significant corner of my net worth, I don’t drive it with kind of abandon I did when it was a $3000 carnival ride.

I'm actually happily porscheless, sold them a little before the peak. I sold mine because I was done track driving and with the increasing values I didn't want to daily drive them.
Reading between the lines, you seem to want a driver. If those cars were in my garage, I'd sell the 993 (I prefer the 911, and I suspect it's harder to replace) and the BMW and pick up a cheap boxster, cayman or macan. A replaceable driver that I wouldn't worry about parking in a public lot. |
