A car needs to go - Which one?

Certainly a first world problem...

I have a daily driver Volkswagen Alltrack, great daily and all around versatile car. It's staying.

I have three others I am very attached to and have owned for many years. They're well sorted and fun to drive. All straight and rust free. But I'm tired of owning four cars and it's time to start trimming down. I have a feeling whatever input I get from the board here I still won't be able to decide:

A 2004 BMW 325i 5 speed with a Sport Package. I've owned since new and it's probably the best all around car I've ever owned. Fun to drive, reliable and easy to work on. Parts are starting to get harder to find (quality parts anyway) and much more expensive. 254,000 miles. It's shocking how reliable this car has been.

A 1995 Porsche 993, six speed manual. I love this car, a wonderful car to drive and value just keeps going up (which makes me drive it less, I used to drive it to work occasionally but not anymore). 117,000 miles.

A 1984 Porsche 3.2 Carrera, Not as in nice a shape as the 993 but a well sorted driver. (lots of rock chips form previous owner) Just spent a crap load reupholstering the sport seats. Much simpler maintenance than the 993, oil changes are a breeze in comparison, classic 911 shape. Also worth a lot more than when I bought it. 114,000 miles. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1757600503.jpg

Sorry for the small images of the P cars. The 325i has more usability and that's probably the best argument to not sell that one.

damn...Sophie's choice!!

I'd advertise all three and pull the ads down after the first one sells.

Shaun @ Tru6 09-11-2025 07:46 AM

that's easy, the BMW since it's the closest car to the VW.

Like yours, my 07 328i just hit 270K miles last week. Parts are still easy to get and cheap though.

Sell the BMW to Jerry http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1183603-help-me-out-e30-decision.html

Two birds one stone!

Just my gut, kill the Bimmer.

His thread kind of made think about selling one of the P cars because the prices keep going up (which takes the fun out of owning them). However I'm fairly religious about maintenance and I hate doing coolant changes on cars, which makes owning old 911s simpler and the BMW less attractive (in that regard). All three were made before tech nannies worked their way into all cars now which makes selling any of them more difficult.

Other than the 75k mile 2nd gear awol issue on the trans, the 3.2 911s from teh mid/late 80s are basically bullet proof. On top of that, I think they are in the top 3 or 4 of Porsches to Own Forever.

Personally, I'd sell the AllTrack . . . but otherwise, sell the BMW. It is a good car, I like that gneration of 3-series a lot, but no Porsche, and no matter how well you've cared for it, the mileage is getting up there.

aschen 09-11-2025 08:58 AM

You have good taste in cars, and I have no advice for you

Id shove the all track off a cliff to save one of these, but not my call :)

faverymi 09-11-2025 09:01 AM

Think the other way.

How about if you could only keep one......

That may help decide which one is your less desirable car

edgemar 09-11-2025 09:10 AM

The bimmer is depreciating the other 2 are not...

greglepore 09-11-2025 09:11 AM

I'm with you on the values taking the fun out. I'd sell one of the 911's as they're very similar cars, I guess the question is whether you prefer driving the g body or the 993.

onewhippedpuppy 09-11-2025 09:13 AM

If money isn’t a factor, it’s the BMW for sure. You already own a four door practical German car that is newer and lower miles, why have two? Meanwhile you can hold two uniquely different 911s that will very likely at a minimum hold their value, if not appreciate.

Also, go drive those things! Sure they have gone up in value, but we aren’t taking $250k either! We live in a world where a new Suburban can sticker at over $100k, in the grand scheme of things 911s aren’t THAT valuable.

Shaun @ Tru6 09-11-2025 09:16 AM

Q for those posting: Why does the value take out the fun?

wdfifteen 09-11-2025 10:00 AM

For a lot of us the greater a car’s value the more cautious we are about how we drive it. Now that my Speedster represents a significant corner of my net worth, I don’t drive it with kind of abandon I did when it was a $3000 carnival ride.

dad911 09-11-2025 10:17 AM

I'm actually happily porscheless, sold them a little before the peak. I sold mine because I was done track driving and with the increasing values I didn't want to daily drive them.

Reading between the lines, you seem to want a driver.
If those cars were in my garage, I'd sell the 993 (I prefer the 911, and I suspect it's harder to replace) and the BMW and pick up a cheap boxster, cayman or macan. A replaceable driver that I wouldn't worry about parking in a public lot.

That's what insurance is for!

I've thought of that very idea, on old 996 or 997 but they're getting pretty old now and they have their own problems.

To those that say that's what insurance is for - I do drive them and they're insured under agreed value (the 911s). The hard part is searching out a replacement, the market has changed dramatically in the last 20-30 years.

911 Rod 09-11-2025 11:07 AM

No one needs two 911's. Oh wait ......
I'd sell the 993.

Your Speedster is on a different level than standard issue Carrera's, etc., so that I understand. Anything 74 to 89 is driveable nearly anywhere/anytime (with intelligence) with the right insurance. Earlier cars can be too. I never gave a thought to not driving my 73 bomber, which is a special order car, around. But if my 69 after restoration, which would be close to your Speedster, that will be a carefully driven car. But still used.
