I Really Like Craigslist....

...for buying or selling items that are too costly to ship because of size.

Been selling whatever I can find that I haven't used in the last few years...downsizing.
All Craigslist sales have been ideal and fast.

Yesterday, I listed these two in different ads and they were both paid and gone as of this morning. Both buyers asked if I had anything else that I might care to sell. And best of all, both asked when would be the best time to see them and arrived within 5 minutes of the agreed time with the exact cash. :)

Wow.
I found a set of wheels/tires to upgrade the Miata to 15" wheels on craigslist.
When I arrived, it was obvious the tires were junk, so I asked for a lower price.
The seller said I was the first person to actually show up as agreed, and she just wanted them gone.
"Please! Take them!"

Nice to know not everybody on craigslist is a flake.

I wish we had the same type of people. Here in the jungle it's a crap shoot. Or just call it crap. One thing I will say about CL is the auto cancel if you don't renew. I see stuff on FBMP that has no date. Now I realize that's simply FB bait to see more ads. The items are long gone and the people don't ever reply. Worse with OfferUp.

From a philosophical stand point, eBay, FB and to a certain point, CL, these sites have ruined the local used items sales trade by allowing stale ads and unlimited scams.

I just followed an ad on FBMP that led to Wayfair, or you were supposed to think. But I copied part of the url and entered it as a scam question in a search. Oh boy, 100%. I don't know how Wayfair combats this but I guess IDC.

Very limiting but if I don't see the item in front of me or the cash, there is no interaction. Nowadays I limit my travel to a few miles because of the certain uncertainty.

My recent score on the milling machine was a once in 5 years exception. If not for a score now and then, I wouldn't even open up CL. I looked every day for months never expecting to buy one.

I’ve sold a couple sets of wheels on Craigslist and both sales went smoothly. Maybe partially because I really didn’t care about the money, just wanted a few bucks and the wheels out of my life.

I bought my last car on Craigslist and that was okay, but it turned out to be a used car dealer, so less hassle as they did all the title paperwork etc.

I do have a couple things to try and sell on there soon, fingers crossed. These are also things I just want gone, so not too worried about money and will list very cheap, which I think is mandatory for selling on Craigslist.

I'm equidistant from Grand Rapids and Muskegon
So, I usually browse both....but only for 'Tools' and 'Farm+Garden'

The other categories I'm not interested in. The 'Cars and Trucks' section is mostly dealers.

I gave up on craigslist and ebay 10+ years ago, too many scammers.

With Facebook marketplace, I can look at a buyer/seller's profile and posts and get a feeling right away if they are legit.

I think it varies with the area. I don't see any when I'm using CL.
Just the car dealers taking advantage of the free advertising.
And the sellers that renew their listings 50 different times.

What's with the downsizing, Steve? Are you planning to check yourself into a "retirement village" so you've got more ripe targets or something? I do hear that chicks love turtles! :D

stevej37 09-17-2025 12:46 PM

^^^ I keep buying stuff and have run out of room. My storage shed is filled with tools that I haven't used for 10 years or more...why keep them? And it's nice to see buyers getting a good price on well kept items.

I'll never live in a retirement village...I love my country place.

I bought my Hobie 16 and my Craftsman LT2000 off of Craigslist.

I use CL and FBMP. Marketplace is far more active. Which is good. And bad. CL seems to be people who are 60+ years old. Less traffic. Maybe less BS.

But Milt is correct. It is just a mess. No shows. Flakes of all kinds. Bot scammers. Exhausting.

cabmandone 09-18-2025 04:01 AM

I haven't looked on CL for stuff to buy and haven't sold on CL in over 2 years. I might have to take a peek again.

Cajundaddy 09-18-2025 06:49 AM

I have used both CL and FBMP quite a bit buying and selling over the last 10 years. Musical instruments, audio gear, tools, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, wheels and tires. My impression is that it is about 10/1 scammers, losers, and flake responses vs quality buyers and sellers but I have figured out how to weed them quickly and find the less flakey buyer/sellers to get it done.

1. If their first contact is to make a lowball offer sight unseen- blocked
2. If they are unwilling to commit to a meeting time- blocked
3. If they want to trade for some sketchy alternative to cash- nope
4. If they want to do some fuzzy Zelle payment and have a friend pick up the item- blocked

Agree to a time and place, treat each other with respect, cash and carry in person for under $5k. For big ticket items like a classic 993, we meet at a bank to confirm title and funds transfer.

Local C List has nearly died since everybody started using FB Marketplace. Marketplace is the only reason I am on Facebook. I list stuff on both but marketplace gets the most action.

Of all the damage social media has done to this country (or the world for that matter) I miss craigslist the most. I used to wheel and deal on there so much and its all gone. Its tough being a car guy these days with no access to any sort of local classifieds but I refuse to be part of the disease of social media. I wish more people would do the same but I digress.

stevej37 09-18-2025 08:13 AM

The CL in my area is busy as normal. When I make a new posting, it's usually down the page behind 20 or more newer listings within 5 minutes.

I resisted until about 4 years ago. Needed to sell my Cayman. Since then Ive sold an S10, a E150, a motorcycle some mowers and a bunch of other stuff. Just no traffic on Craigs list.

CL has become such a shat show i much prefer FB Market Place for both selling and shopping. You can look over the posters profile and there is so much less BS that way.

I have been noticing they are now having ads that seem to be ebay generated.
