Lots of plants are toxic and will kill humans. Some are so toxic, just brushing against them will kill you.

No, but close enough to keep humans away. There is plenty of stuff that will kill us. I assume that since we are a fairly highly evolved life form, it's a bit harder to highjack us and make us do their bidding. Although, I'm sure that without any form of medicine, it may be possible for some fungus to do whacky things to people.

I believe there is a theory that the Salem witch trials may have been caused by ergot poisoning.

In 1518 the citizens in what is now France just started dancing in the streets until they dropped from exhaustion. The most logical explanation is ergot poisoning.

Just imagine, in a small village, many of the citizens just dancing to no music or prompting. Just dancing and dancing. At least they did not get run over by cars that had not been invented for a few centuries more.
