Are tariffs directly impacting anyones international orders?
 

Wondering if anyone has been directly impacted with international orders. I need to order some ac units from CR, they sent me pricing along with info pulled from Customs Border Protection, which is just more confusing.

Wonder if anyone has had problems, what pricing tariffs are for the importer (me/you), wait times in customs etc.

I bought fog lights for 600 bucks. Ups demanded 200.90 more for tariffs before they would hand them over.
So yes the federal sales tax impacted me.
JP Morgan received 26 dollars of that 200 to be the broker.

So UPS charged you on delivery, did they give you a warning of this prior to delivery? Where were the lights imported from and were they new or used? Did you have to contact JPM prior to shipment to have them broker the deal?

Yes. I've spent about $1,000 in tariffs for about $3K in parts. Most of that was unexpected since the orders were placed before the tariffs went into effect. And yes, each one had a payment processing fee of $15-25 before they would deliver. Some sent me an email, some I wasn't aware of the payment until I checked tracking. Countries include the Netherlands, Canada, China and a couple that I don't remember the country of origin. All had the tariffs attached.

How anyone can not call this a tax on the consumer is beyond me. All these purchases were from small companies or individuals. No way for them to eat it and no reason for them to.

How do you pay the tariff? ie when the part shows up, when the part arrives domestically?
I know in the past, at least here in California, that I have been charged for tax usually 6 months or so down the road by DHL for shipments from Germany and Italy. This was pre tariff and was a tax only issue.

I am really trying to get a handle on this prior to ordering for a couple complete dual condenser units from Jonny.

This really sucks for businesses. Going to have to spend a bunch of time researching prices before quoting an engine job, or any job. People are going to hold off on repairs.

It used to be you got a letter in the mail, requesting payment. Often months after receiving the product. Now you (usually) get an email prior to delivery requiring a payment to receive the shipment. You pay online with a card or PP. No pay, no delivery. The one I just discovered today that was waiting on payment didn’t send me a notification. It was only noted when I checked tracking online. And no, I wouldn’t dare refuse the shipment because the seller isn’t responsible to take it back and return your funds.
If you buy an CR system, I would expect to pay an additional ~33% on top of the sold price and shipping cost. That’s just my own opinion based on my experience. It could be higher or lower. Who knows for sure.

I agree. I bought an electronic ignition system for my motorcycle from a seller in the Netherlands. She had to register an additional license or something just to sell to me in the US. That was a US requirement, not her country.
The part is for a 1970’s Italian motorcycle. I’m lucky she makes this unique part. It’s never going to be made in the US.

I’m sure our distributors selling us parts from Germany will soon be raising prices to cover the cost of the import tariffs.

Carrera distributor cap was $60, now $124. It's here now. The trans parts I got a few weeks ago were easily 40% more. This supposed to be helping the economy??

I bought a remote controlled slope and rough terrain lawn mower from China before all this Tariff BS and it was a seamless process and a very well made machine. Couldn't be happier with it. I wanted to get another one as I have lots of rough terrain and need more than one to get the job done quickly. Now it is going to cost almost 50% more with tariffs and hidden fees. If this is supposed to make me want to buy an American made remote controlled mower for literally 10x the price, whoever thought this up did not think too hard. Pretty stupid concept to enforce a federal sales tax on every American buying foreign goods when we simply don't have the equivalent products made in the USA, and never will at competitive prices. If anyone is in the market for a very well built RC mower, click on the link below. Even with fees and tariffs, they can beat the American competition by a mile. The only loser in this deal is the customer...having to pay more.

For comparison, there is an American company making a very nice looking machine and probably better quality than the Chinese one, but at ~$40-60k, who the hell do they think is going to buy one??

R&S cam sprockets are now unavailable due to tariffs.

I had zero clue about the 200 ups charge. uPS posted it on the delivery note and would not leave the package until i handed him a check. No cash or credit card accepted.
Then a week later they sent me an invoice saying I owed another $1.10. And the invoice showed JP Morgan getting 26.00 for brokerage fees. I paid tge 1.10 with paypal.
Really sleazy thievery in my opinion. We pay for the federal sales tax not the supplier.
So be prepared to pay 33% more.

$15-25(or more) brokerage fees are going to put a lot of money in someones pocket. It will feel somewhat obscene when it's charged on a $3 item.
I noticed eBay has a bold warning about the possibility of additional charges on items not from the US.

I know some people that choose to loose their deposit rather than pay over 50% in taxes/tariffs upon delivery.

Tariff is another name for a sales tax on US citizens who should be free to purchase whatever they want from whomever they want without having to send a tax to the federal government and pay JP Morgan for handling our money. It is taxation without representation.
A turd by any other name still smells the same they can call it a tariff but it is still a tax on us.

On a whim, I bought a custom pair of racing seats because the customization and price point was excellent. In my excitement, I had forgotten about extant tariffs. Now I have no idea what kind of taxes I’ll have to pay. This is most certainly a blow to consumers and business owners plain and simple.

Just paid $57 in tariff for a £24 ($32) relay. Shipping was another £12.77 ($17). I don’t get the math on that one at all!

TLDR What should have been a 4 day process and $85, turned into 6 weeks and $140 along with a ream of paperwork and hours of phone calls.


I ordered a weber jet pump body from eBay (italy) and it got held in customs for weeks. Took me like 4 phone calls and finally the seller had to provide a material sheet. Then they hit me with a bill of about 40% the cost of the part in order to release from customs.

This was a few weeks ago. I just got a huge packet of papers from FedEx yesterday. There's copies and invoices and all sorts of BS. It's straight out of Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

My wife wanted to buy some food items from France. Things she has purchased every year for the last thirty years for the holidays. Last week the vender (small company) said - no shipments to the USA.

That’s becoming common. DHL won’t even ship to the States any more.

If you are a regular UPS commercial customer, they will pay CBP, and bill you net 7 days. If you don’t have terms, it’s cod prior to delivery.

My duties recently went from 25% to 50%. It’s a real FU of a tax on anything made out of aluminum or steel.
