How long is reasonable to store a car sold on BAT?

I sold a 914 project on BAT on October 1st.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1972-porsche-914-97/

The buyer has paid, so no problems there. But, it is still sitting here in my shop. I would like the room and they seem non-plussed about getting it. It is a dealer and I get that transport of a project can be tricky. I finally texted again Friday and was told they would update me next week. Their previous updates have basically been we will let you know when we know. How long is reasonable to hold onto a sold car? I think I need to give them a deadline.

Tell 'em you're going to put it outside under a tarp next week.

This. Or send an Amazon link for a car cover to have them buy and send to you since you have to move the car outside on Tuesday.

you have to be firm with no room for wiggle room. The car is going outside on Tuesday. Send me a cover for it.

Free storage to a dealer is like free drugs to an addict. Roll it to the street and send a pic. They'll pick it up the next day

+1, only now, not next week, and forget about the tarp. I would feel differently about it if they communicated better, but from what you say the buyer doesn’t care much about the car or you.

Simply tell them what the storage charges are starting two weeks after the sale, (unless different arrangements were made), and that they can send you the $$ or have the transporter pay upon collecting the car.

decent google reviews except for the guy that said he accepted their offer, but never came to get car......

I suspect he's shopping it out for a quick flip to save shipping, and hasn't found a buyer yet.

Does BAT have any rules about shipping and pick-up? There must be some sort of a 'contract'

Good catch. I'll contact BAT if I don't get a firm date from them on Monday.

BAT washes it's hands of the both of you once the sale is made. They got their 5% and that's all they care about

I agree, this guy is just taking advantage of your generosity and willingness to put up with his BS.

This or advise you will charge them $50 per day storage fee which will need to be paid in cash when they come pick it up and in either can you will no longer be responsible for damage or stolen items (just like the towing companies when they are hired by police to take your car off the roadway). If they ghost you, send a certified letter. Know an attorney that can do you a favor?

Sales on BaT aren’t legally binding, as Greg noted they take their fee and say “peace out”. So there’s no grounds for storage fees, and if you roll the car under the nearest tree outside it’s only hurting you if the seller bails. People have this inflated view of BaT as somehow being safer or more secure, but in reality it’s just an auction site with a comments section.

The only recourse I’ve seen is BaT allowing to re-list the car for free if the buyer flakes out. But I don’t think that’s guaranteed.

He said he already paid for the car so no worries about him flaking out. He just might have a car sitting for some time outside.

BAT has no rules relating to storage as others have said, peace out once auction is over. UNLESS you specifically stated something in your listing.

You may have a state law that allows fees though. Those are typically for after towing storage but I'd take a look.

How long is reasonable? I'd say October 15 was the day reason left the conversation unless the guy has made some good faith efforts and has communicated those with you.

Wow, $50/day sounds cheap to me!

The big difference that you are missing is that the winning bidder’s CC is immediately charged 5% of the hammer price, which is $5k in this case I’m guessing. That cuts way down on people jerking off with winning bids. I think that you are confusing it with eBay, where there truly is no skin in the game and a massive percentage of “sales” don’t go through.

That and the fact that the car is already paid for, which is another part of the BaT protocol, which admittedly someone could fail to do but they would be out their buyer’s fee. Other than that, you hit it on the head.

I know that you have not been successful marketing your vehicles on the site but my track record is batting 1000, with every listing paid for within a day or two of auction ending, site unseen, (except for my photos/videos).
