We interrupt ppot for another oil video
As a curmudgeon who's concerned about lower viscocity oils 0-20 etc... I was happy to see this video come out. Since this has been discussed here a bunch, it was good to see some data.

I watched that one this morning. Good stuff. And just another reason why I skip the videos that seem like they are AI generated.
|
I'd always heard the AI voices, but makes me wonder if the entire 50 engine study was AI making stuff up like discussed here in recent AI thread, like the lawyers using AI which made up non existing court cases and stuff.
At very least, it was nice to get some data on the 0-20, as my wife's subaru calls for it. |
Nice to see Jr. following in Dad's vocation.
It's a shame they didn't get into the effects on HP. Engine masters (Speed TV) spent an hour identified HP gains by switching to the higher viscosity - sort of counter intuitive . Bill K |
Lake Speed Jr. is one of the youtube sources I consider to be good..

So, w/o having to watch the whole vid, what does he say? I mean 0w sounds crazy anyway, but what would he run in your NA typical Euro-Japo in line 4?
What would you run besides what is recommended in the OM? |
^in my wife's application, OEM recommends the 0-20 but for ROW I think it's 5-30.
The video goes through 4 parts. First it tears up the ai video. Second it shows how info can be skewed if one compares break in miles <10k vs. >10k in different weight testing. Third it shows 0-20 holding up just fine compared to 5-30 post 10k. Fourth it shows diesel showing less wear with some higher viscocities (the reverse of the gas engines). For me- it gave peace of mind in my wife's car with 0-20 (that my old crabby self would consider a "fleet/epa mpg extender at the expense of engine longevity") weight. My inner self wanted the 5-30, but the warranty wants 0-20. Especially "bob" the oil guy who talks about "fracting" oils and how the high range multiviscocity oils can break down rather quickly in lab testing, even the mere mention of 0-20 scared me. This 0-20 video helped me sleep a little better at night with real world data and not potentially voiding warranty. I'm so happy, I might even concede that CP was right about the lower weights.... :) naw... I like lake speed jr. . His energy reminds me of a jack russell terrier. Heck, he should probably run several laps around his yard before making a video, but his info is amazing. and it looks like about everyone here is already subscribed- so I'm late to the party:D |
Thank you, LEAKY for the cliff notes. I haven't had my German I-4 long enough to change the oil. But I'm going to do it prematurely as IDT the oil in it would be all that good being a dealer sold used car with all the recent service. You know they didn't do the brake lines and I had to do the trans as it was just overdue. So I concluded that they likely used marginal oil.
I ran Motul in the Boxster. I like good oils. I should probably watch. |
I recently purchased a 2023 Mazda CX5 for my wife as her/our daily driver . It's my first foray into a 0W20 engine oil vehicle . My old school mind says use 5w30 but the manufacturer warranty says stick with 0w20 . I will concede to the warranty but it just doesn't feel right :D
