Misstep vs. Missed Step
 
So one is a step taken that shouldn't have been

and the other is a step not taken that should've been

That's the one I know about. I fell down some stairs because I was texting my friend, no idea about the other.

I think of missed step being more about not following instructions instead of a walking problem.

Missed Step:

In college, for extra credit I did a scavenger hunt in the LA area. My friend and I left Fresno and started listening to the instructions tape at the beginning of the grapevine. The very first STEP was "do not take highway 99". Your first item is to describe the fence around a vineyard on Highway 44 at the Kern County Sign (It was a string of cactus' btw). We had to backtrack about 60 miles.

Misstep:

Telling my friend that we didn't need to listen to the instructions until Bakersfield and instead we should listen to my brand new Led Zepplin tape. Even though he wanted to start listening to the directions as soon as we got in the car. I told him he was an idiot which was a huge misstep on my part.
