Thanks for the suggestions. The Boxo sets look nice. I have choices to make. I have a set of tools I carry in the El Camino that are just junk. The ratchet has a horrid feel, and the are pitiful quality. They were a gift long ago. I have had to do a battery swap in a parking lot using them when I had a battery just short out and it would not even let me jump start the Elky.

I figure carrying the tools is like washing you car, and making it rain. If I carry some tools, I will not need them, but if I don't I will need some simple 13mm socket and the wrench. Yea, I know there is no real cause and effect, but it makes me feel better to have some basic tools.

I had my original '72S factory tool kit...but wanted to keep it original for shows...the tool kit was part of PCA concours judging back in the day. So, I did approx. the same thing. Sears sold a bucket boss brand tool roll that fit my needs, and the USA made craftsman stuff was still available. So, wrenches, ratchets, screwdrivers, etc. all Craftsman.

The factory toolkit went with the 911S. That roll now is in a Mustang's trunk, since Ford went metric...

Paul, for full concours judging, the factory tool roll is part of the judging. I have no idea why the previous owner kept the tool roll. He never worked on the car, he just took it to a local Porsche expert shop.

I have all the stuff for my 997 including the German mandated safety stuff since it was tourist delivery then went to the Ring with the first owner.

Cheap bastid, if you ask me. Probably knew he could sell it to a guy who needed a kit for shows for much more than the tools themselves are worth. Sad but true, you could probably have a leather shop make a leather tool roll & replace the factory tools with snap-on for less than a factory kit would sell for today.

Let's just say I gave Evren a very much friend's price for the car, spare parts, toolkit, all my books, etc. Yeah...one reason was to piss off a few people. I succeeded.

Porsche now sells a brand new tool kit for my 85. It is $572 but the quality of the individual tools looked like something made in India with home made sand casting. It was horrible quality. The tool bag was really nice, but the tools are horrid. I did not expect Snap On level, but they need to put some tools in there that are not garbage.

Bingo...the same look of the original tools supplied for my 911S...actually, the Craftsman wrenches I bought were of a higher functional quality. One thing you might do is make a list of the tools in this kit, see if they can be replicated functionally with a decent brand...I remember the factory wrenches in my car's kit were all open end..I covered all the same sizes but with combination wrenches, simply because box end grabs fasteners better than open end. That meant more wrenches in the roll, but I was okay with that.

I think Tekton tools are generally a good replacement for the old made in USA craftsman stuff...sockets, ratchets, wrenches, etc. Maybe even a little better...made in Tiawan for Tekton Tools USA...I think maybe the same Taiwan company that makes Harbor Freight's top of the line "Icon" brand. When it comes to sockets & wrenches, Tekton doesn't skip sizes with their sets, others may do so. Tekton's guarantee is also as close to the old Craftsman as I've seen...send 'em a pic of the broken tool...a new one will arrive in a few days. No need to send them the broken one.

But by all means, shop around...Gearwrench is good stuff, NAPA's lineup is pretty good, many mid range priced tools that are good are out there...

Ive really been tempted to get that porsche classic tool roll. I figured it was a complete rip off but still sad to hear.


I think a modern lithium jump starter and tire inflator should be part of the kit.

A tool roll is a lot quieter than a tool box.
I have the original roll in my 84 Carrera and it's never noticed or used.

If I remember correctly my 83 SC had some space available in the engine compartment between the oil filter and the forward bulkhead . Like a small shelf . Epoxy down two tie mounts and you could zip tie a small tool roll . May or may not be a crazy idea :D
