If I came across as condescending or just an azz ... I apologize.

There are many approaches depending ...

I would NEVER set up a home network for anyone else to "maintain" if I am "the only guy" with the keys to the network kingdom, and MY "glass house" networks will never be compromised by unnecessary, and sometimes utter nonsense either.

Two IT networking issues for the OP to consider.

But what do I know ... or not know ... I dunno ;)?

Many years ago there was a new and terrible computer virus called "Columbus Day Virus" and it had banks and businesses going bonkers as there were afraid of loosing everything. Well Columbus Day came and just about 4 PM one of the TV stations got a call that the biggest bank in San Diego had been hit! Oh my, so the station sent a reporter and camera man to see what happened. In the VP's office there was a very large sideboard with a TV set on it doing a piece on of all things....Columbus! On the VP's desk was his computer screen showing a "blue screen of death" that their head of IT said it was from the TV set on the side board??!! Huh, that seems to me to be a bit impossible but their IT man said it would take a couple days to fix it back to normal.

I used this as one of the examples in my computer security class and most of my students agreed with me and it shows how easily people can be tricked!

LOL ... OK John, you win!

But there are easier ways to win ... even with Windoze ;)

"IT"... it really is an orb.

My sis-in-law's husband was found dead yesterday by the sheriff after being alerted by a passerby. He'd been out for a walk.
He's the one who helped me get going with computers when I got laid off back in '92. Got me my first box which I had to upgrade/put a power supply in. Then I was off to the races learning how to get it to respond to my wishes. He enjoyed my recklessness when it came to trying things he'd never attempt only because he knew the possible consequences.
We weren't as close as I'd hoped we'd be when we moved into our house which is only about 2 miles from his, if that.
He will be missed.

Damm Scott, it is not good when those you know or love die unexpectedly or similar. Since May when I turned 80 I found several more of the men I knew in the Navy or later on in the database world have died and it makes me wonder: why am I still around and I just have to tell myself the answer will come some day. My racing buddy Ted died 2 years before I found about it and makes me think maybe I should have called him more than I did but too late now.

Wow ... that's terrible news ... at any age ... at any time :(.

Best to you Scott... I will defer to John on all of your PC issues ... you both rock... always have imo.

That said, to address your original IT question regarding accessing online banking, etc. "safely" ... if anyone takes ANYTHING away from this thread .... make sure 2FA is enable.

I was 33 (and a communications AVP at a megabank), when another 43 yr old "geezer" dropped on the golf course... July 5... 1993.

I started at IBM in r&d (Advanced Communications Products) ten years earlier ... microcode development fresh outta college ... I had fun ;).

You are good Scott ... enable 2FA tho. :)

Best to you both....

RIP to your mentor..

I've used a CU for the last 3 decades ... an excellent one imnsho .... but they are much more like banks now too ... for better or worse :D.

They just changed their system for online access ...

I got locked out :)

Bigly,...

After resetting my acct. "lock-out" via phone... my 2FA was gone.

They now support ALL types of 2FA, PW managers, etc. from minimal to max.

I roll with basic 2FA with a text to my phone, and a decently secure PW.

Length matters .... she was right after all :D

I've had dynamic fobs, etc. and a photographic memory for PWs .... unless you know the serial # from my boyhood '67 Schwinn .... good luck :).

Enable 2FA folks .... on everything that matters.

I'm not guarding Ft. Knox either ;)

Best to you all...
