Many thanks! I have not listened to all the artists suggested but you have me well on the way. Thank you!!!!!

Frazey Ford is KILLING IT!

I am a fan of Al Green. Can absolutely hear the band. Awesome.

I am digging Knopfler too!

The sax through a processor? Crazy.

That Dave Alvin? That was TASTY!

And Samantha Fish? I like that too! Funny thing? She is playing Portland in 8 days. Coincidence???

And now I am apparently a Grace Bowers fan too! (odd coincidence? I had the same Gibson SG as she plays years back.). She can TEAR IT UP.

Can’t really help with less than 20 year old music except maybe Wilco but they been around a while now. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Sky Blue Sky and A Ghost is Born I think are their best.

Tom Waits
-Rain Dogs
-Swordfish Trombones
-Frank’s wild Years

All JJ Cale

All John Prine

The Black Angels

Manu Chao - Clandestino

Motörhead
- Overkill
- Bomber
- Ace of Spades

Eliades Ochoa - Tributo al Cuarteto Patria

Doug Sahm
-Texas Tornado
- Groover’s Paradise
- ..and Band

Some Jazz favorites. List I made for Berrettafan

1. Shelly Mann & His Men - Complete Live at the Black Hawk Vol 1 - 4 (my all time favorite jazz recording though I admit that the trumpet on this is not great, performance/tone)
2. Thelonious Monk - Live at the Jazz workshop
3. Jimmy Smith and Kenny Burrell - Blue Bash!
4. Miles Davis- Kind of Blue (not overhyped. Its a masterpiece)
5. Art Pepper - Intensity
6. Hank Mobley - Soul Station
7. Ben Webster meets Oscar Peterson
8. Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
9. Keith Jarrett - at the Blue Note Vol 1-6
10. Grant Green The Complete Quartets with Sonny Clark
11. John Coltrane Africa Brass Sessions Vol 1 -2
12. Ahmad Jamal - At the Pershing
13. Sun Ra - The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra
14. Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington - The Great Summit
15. Duke Ellington - meets Coleman Hawkins
16. Sonny Clark - Cool Struttin'
17. Gerry Mulligan - Night Lights
19. Miles Davis - Bags' Groove (PRLP 7109)
20. Joe Henderson - Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn

The S/N ratio is extremely low for great new artists since the streaming era IMO. There are still great musicians out there but finding them in a sea of forgettable autotune formula songs is difficult.

Over the last 20 years I tend to lean towards current artists who are exceptional performers AND their music is accessible to the masses. Their songwriting must have theme and melody, a groove, and a relatable story.

A few current mainstream artists I like:
John Mayer, Norah Jones, Vince Gill, Ed Sheeran

As a guitarist, these active performers still move me:
Tommy Emmanuel, Andy McKee, Robben Ford, Brad Paisley, Jon Gomm.

When all else fails I go back and listen to Woodstock live, Stevie Wonder, or early Chicago. Epic performances by real humans, no digital funny business.

My last last offering. I LOVE this song.

That is Al freaking Green's band. (The HHi Rhythm Section). Unreal arrangement.

I'm a huge fan of Frazey Ford and her days in the Be Good Tanyas, which have quite a few great songs. To me, this one is a masterpiece:

I’ll suggest Ike Reilly- fabulous and creative lyrics. Try garbage day, duty free, hip hop thighs and commie drives a nova for starters.

Tho' I have zero musical capabilities, it's been a huge part of my life too....but I can't even begin to digress....

We are all so different ... I can zone in a band and listen non-stop... with lots to pick from.... lately (and always a favorite) it's been ...

JJ Cale .... several compilation cd sets and individual releases...

I would buy even more JJ if I needed another disc.... ever ;)

New music can be old music that's new.

And JJ's recordings sound freaking awesome through my Carver/Polk SDA system...

Because I use a phone, I don't visit the music thread....

JJ .... Jerry ... ???

:)

I spend a fair amount of time listening to Outlaw Country on Sirius XM. Channel 62. You never know what you'll hear.

I always liked the syndicated weekly shows The Acoustic Storm and The Deep End.

Listening to The Acoustic Storm right now on Pirate Radio out of Key West. WKYZ 96.7 and 101.7. They're now playing a Cheryl Crow recording I've never heard before.

Gogar 11-16-2025 07:32 AM

I've been liking these for a sec. All over the map though

Bluesy maybe classic rock

I love this band because they can actually execute these songs live. Lots of sound from 4 people

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3ihDujRSUQM?si=CmY6CR5cegZwO3W7" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And if you want to get in early on something (IMO) and you like maybe . . . System of a down but from Israel but with a cute chick try this. I think it's awesome

If you like creative covers you can get lost in this band. Rotating members all the time there's really only 1 or 2 guys that are always there.

This is a good rock band with guitar focus. Was a duo for a long time but added bass about 5 years ago

I am pretty thrifty and only stream Pandora. I am very much a Cowboy Junkies fan. Played them just this last week. Also have some Chris Issak, but he doesn't get nearly as much play time. Dave Alvin!!! I used to listen to The Blasters way back when. I am pretty sure I saw Dave Alvin with X or ???

Try a Spotify Free account - I believe there’s some significant advantages. Try Isaak’s Baja Sessions album. Prolly my favorite of his.

vash 11-16-2025 06:47 PM

I’ve been listening to Adele Castillion. Wish I spoke French.

wdfifteen 11-17-2025 01:19 AM

Florence + The Machine is different and interesting.

Elephant Revival (they kill White Rabbit and Have a Cigar)

I’ve played the metaphorical grooves out of Feist’s The Reminder”.

My taste is similar to Carlton’s so thanks for those suggestions.

As for making music, being in bands etc you guys have my greatest admiration. I never “got” music, and even though I try, my efforts to play a guitar are pathetic.

jhynesrockmtn 11-17-2025 08:02 AM

Tedeschi Trucks is one of my faves.

I have been going backward and discovering stuff I wish I knew about at the actual time the albums came out, but....

Drive by Truckers is on that list. Just got their Decoration Day reissue
The Wood Bros are great and great live
Big Head Todd and the Monsters has been fun to explore, thanks for the great music Gogar
The Decemberists are a fun band out of Portland
Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt
Freddy Jones Band
The Revivalists
Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats

If you like Drive By Truckers, you'll like Jason Isbell.

Exactly. I sort of got to DBT through Isbell. I saw Jason in concert 2 years ago.

wdfifteen 11-17-2025 08:58 AM

This is part of a playlist I have on my iPad that I call "Wimmin Singin'" It's one of my favorites. I would recommend any of these artists.

A more recent band that I really like is Volbeat. I don't think they've ever recorded a 'bad' song.

Nope :D

Loved the DBT .... got all the early stuff ... DBT with Jason and "her" on bass before the break-up ... on disc an at the Cat's Cradle... up close and personal :)

They USED to freakin' ROCK ... menolikey Jason solo.

Been seeing DT since he was 9, and for years in clubs (here and in Jax)... a one-trick slide pony ... but cool as hell.

He and Susan a few years back. in Raleigh... they were peaking ... he simply is a master now ... her too :)

Jerry Douglas .... jaw dropping in my last club show ... 15 ft away :)

I don't get out much now tho'....

Suggest away guys :)!

I've never seen BHT live ... my loss :D

Y'all have done me a great service! Thank you!!!

I happen to have a very lovely and well funded library in my city. Considering how I am sort of a luddite, I have a CD player and have now reserved a large number of the artists mentioned above.

The more esoteric ones were not available so I will need to work on that a bit.

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed!
