Suggest a musician / band thread
Just like the title says. Music was a huge part of my life once. I played in endless bands and dedicated much of my free time in some sort of music oriented pursuit. If you care, I was front and center in the pre-grunge music scene in the PNW. The word "grunge" hadn't been coined at the time.
Then I met a girl (correct term. She was barely 18 when we met). Got married. And was completely distracted from music. Now? The most recent bands that I enjoy are 20ish years old: Cake and Sublime. Most of my rotation is classic rock with Rolling Stones and blues centric rock bands being prominent. I do listen to classical occasionally but have a 0% knowledge of it. I am a fan of some jazz acts and have Milt Jackson on rotation. Amy Winehouse has a fantastic backing band but she doesn't seem to be putting out anything new these days. But for the most part, you would be correct to say that I am in a rut. Do any of you have recommendations? I would be very pleased to find some music that isn't 30 years old to enjoy. |
Hate to tell you this, but Amy Winehouse joined the "27 Club" quite a few years ago.
As for the reccomendations, well, Baz put up a thread years ago where people post music and there is some REALLY good music there. Skip Newsome and John Walker are especially good at posting up good stuff that you might not have heard before, at least to my ears. |
I really like Tyler Childers these days. Sorta alt country. Colter Wall is another current favorite but that may be a bit too country for you.

Fitz and the Tantrums first album is really good and I just started listening to Izzy Escobar.
If you like either of those I'll suggest more. Have fun. I love discovering new artists Steve |
Herr O. I was aware about Amy. Some dark humor on my part. Sorry.

What streaming service do you use? First off, I would recommend Cowboy Junkies. Some killer stuff, a good amount of stuff that sounds the same. I like the Lay it Down and Songs of the Recollection (cover songs) albums. Roseanne Cash's The River & The Thread album is a masterpiece IMO. Over the Rhine, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, The Be Good Tanyas (folky), Silver Jews, Dave Alvin, Chris Isaak would be other suggestions.

Was watching "Mind Hunters" on NETFLIX and there was a Charlie Manson episode where they supposedly interviewed him in Vacaville. Some of his music was in the episode and I've heard bit of it previously and kinda like it. Ordered a CD of his early stuff from Tower records and will report back once it arrives.
Used to have a "Charlie don't surf" tee... Have been a fan of the Tragically Hip for a long time. Not hugely popular in the states, but very popular in their home country of Canada. Any Canucks here are prolly very familiar. |
The wife surprised me the other day. We have different musical tastes, but when I'm driving it's my radio station. This was on the other day and she actually said "I kind of like this song".

There's also Halestorm, and I like the new Linkin Park stuff with the new singer. Dirty Honey has to me the ultimate rock guitar tone. I like their stuff. Royal Blood. Black Keys. I'm trying to decide if I like Sleep Token or not. The drummer is phenomenal. |
Steve C.
I am pretty thrifty and only stream Pandora. I am very much a Cowboy Junkies fan. Played them just this last week. Also have some Chris Issak, but he doesn't get nearly as much play time. Dave Alvin!!! I used to listen to The Blasters way back when. I am pretty sure I saw Dave Alvin with X or ??? |
Rival Sons
Blacktop Mojo Kings of Leon . |
Bands I am digging today are Samantha Fish (great guitar playing, singing, and song writing), Grace Bowers (18yr old guitar phenom) and the Hodge Podge, and wet leg (indie from the Isle of Man).

Here's a band I would love to see. They're FINALLY doing an American tour, but the PNW is not on their schedule, unfortunately.

My last last offering. I LOVE this song.
That is Al freaking Green's band. (The HHi Rhythm Section). Unreal arrangement. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0GwAE1UatCg?si=jWivgZUv1l_Oo1yV" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
(And Netflix had a documentary on Kings of Leon. I don't know if it's still up, but it's terrific!)
