halfway around the globe, walked into a stationary store...

I like pens/pencils. it's dumb, I know it.

but I'm drawn to a smooth, dark, rich ink pen. Japan makes a crap ton of pens. it's an industry. I walked in and I had my own pad of paper in my man bag. I went on the hunt.

I bought a Lamy fountain pen in Taipei earlier and the dude screwed up and handed me a fine pen, when I asked for Medium. grrr... my own fault for not double-triple checking, but I know I can buy replacement tips. bibs?

but I was in the mother land of UniBall, Pentel, etc. I scratched my name in cursive about a 1000 times. hahah..I was focusing on Gel pens. I got the Uniball Zento and dropped a few into my basket. moved on.

I picked up a mystery tester, and wrote my name. whoa!! smooth!!! jet jet black ink? what is this thing? I was in line, so I bought two. I looked, and it was a damn Sharpie Gel pen. hahah... I think I can buy a 20 pack of them at Costco. :D

its a good pen. :D. a sharpie!!!

Oh no you’re going to become a pen nerd!

masraum 12-03-2025 11:13 AM

Hilarious that the pen that you fell in love with and bought in Japan was a sharpie!

The funny thing is that I also like pens and pencils! Why is that funny, you didn't ask? Because I HATE writing anything and almost never do it. I do 99.9% of any writing that I do on a computer or electronic device. I've always had the handwriting of a Dr. I can, but pretty much never use cursive anymore, and my printing is only marginally better. But, yeah, pens are cool. But since I never write anything, I don't spend money on them despite seeing them and thinking "man, that's cool! I want that!"

I do have a nice, heavy, metal pen that's got a laser and LED light in it. I got it for free as a gift for buying something.

I used to have a promotional pen that was nice and fat and heavy that had stainless braid around it.

I also had (no idea where it is now) a beat up old Mont Blanc that I found when working at a bar.

I'm a part-time pen nerd - and most everything from Pilot excels at each price point.

From your office supply roller ball to the Vanishing Point (I have maybe seven?) up through the 823 massive vacuum-filler FPs they are all exceptional. The last of those in particular holds probably 3x what a similar sized Pelikan does and writes amazingly. And, though no good pen really leaks that much, the 823's valve mechanism closes off the nib and feed rendering it "safe" in all conditions.

Their out of the box FPs are great and there are some good nibmeisters around. The only downside is that the factory doesn't sell standalone nibs/sections like Pelikan. I had a 823 crash and the 18k nib couldn't be repaired - or replaced it seems. Even without tuning, the soft flex Falcon is a sweet-writing pen for under two bills.

And, sincerely, boo to you for reigniting my desire to get to Japan!

We should meet in Japan!!!

Im a writing utensil nerd. Always have been. Maybe a Gen X thing? I’m addicted to the Rotring 600. I have enough spare erasers and lead to last me the rest of my life. Always loved the Lamy fountain pens too.

I’ll admit I watch those YouTube nerd channels that review fountain pens. My wife thinks I’m nuts. I bought her a nice mechanical pencil with all the replacement leads and erasers. She warned me not to. Within 12 hours it was lost. That was a year ago and we still haven’t found it.

Rotring! I've had several over the years. I love(d) the heft of the instrument.

Tobra 12-03-2025 06:16 PM

You walked into a store that was not moving?

fanaudical 12-03-2025 07:29 PM

For mechanical pencils, the Rotring 600 (and you want the black-lacquered brass model) has no equal...

Most all stores are stationary. I think that we're talking about a stationery store, I love those places. :)

Yes spelling is important. We took our granddaughter to a grocery store recently. I pointed to the stollen in the bakery section. This is stollen I said. My granddaughter said who stole it......:)

I love a good stollen! I need to find some!

Just opened this thread.
We live in a world (PPOT) where somebody understands us.
Absolutely love it.
….and I’m a uniball guy, too. Just can’t handle the pen they hand you at the store, restaurant, bank, etc….
I guess it’s a pretty close-coupled allfliction for those who like the odd, air-cooled, a nice watch, fine firearms, guitars - and an occasional pool cue.

NutmegCarrera 12-07-2025 08:30 AM

Wait, I think I forgot some key elements….
Knives, bicycles, kayaks - and fishing gear.
Let’s not forget about camper, tractor, obscure 4wd vehicle resto. And a smattering of old Mercedes, Saab, Volvo, triumph and the like.
And then there’s motorcycles.

What odd strand of dna do we all share?

nightmares.

my (now) 96 year old neighbor makes me one one every year. bless her heart. but I have seen the process. her cat is on the counter, she will pet the cat with her doughy h hands, errrggckkaaack! she gave me one once wrapped in recycled aluminum...it was from some BBQ joint. hahhaha

I cant eat it. plus all she does is crap on the rising cost of dried fruit..so she barely puts any in there!! lets me honest, its a biscotti really...no a biscotti had a love fest with a dry ass biscuit.

she ruined me off of Stollen..(however you spells it.)

if she rings my doorbell, I'll hide behind the couch stationary so she doenst see me. :D

The very first fountain pen I ever used was in 4th or 5th grade. Our teacher told us we had to have them for cursive penmanship.
Our desks had built in cups for ink wells...it sometimes led to a mess. (the pens were the converter type that drew the ink in with a lever)
