Security Cameras, Catching a Punk, Parental Follow up
I've been having an issue with someone picking up my neighbor's river rocks and launching them across the street - about 10 per day for the last couple of weeks (these are 4-6" diameter). What's dangerous is that the house across the street is a good 75' away because our street has a large median in the middle, and these are landing on their lawn or in the middle of the street.
I have cameras on my house, so I searched the archive, and it turns out to be a kid (probably 15 yrs old) and his girlfriend (or sister). I found the footage and got crystal clear video and photos of the culprit. I printed some photos, laminated them, and posted on two telephone poles on my block. It only took 2 days to be noticed by someone who knows the culprit. Last night when I got home from work, there was a note in my mailbox from the kid's mother. Apparently, a friend of hers took photos of the flyer and sent it to her. The note was extremely apologetic. She asked me what I recommend as punishment. I called her and we discussed the issue. I said that as far as I am concerned, this is now settled and under the rug. As long as the rock throwing has stopped - we're good. She told me that she wants her son to either write a letter of apology or do some yard work for me - I chose the letter. The girl in my photo was his little sister, and the mother made her apologize to me over the phone. She expressed extreme sorrow and told me that she kept one of the river rocks because she was going to paint it (she did not throw any rocks). She offered to pay for the rock. Now for the funny part: The daughter, who looks about 13 or 14 asked if I could make her a copy of the photo that I posted because she looked really good in it :). BTW, when I called the mom, her voice mail said that I had reached the Psychological & Behavioural Therapyst for our local high school. |
If the rocks hadn't been cleaned up I would have asked the mom to have the kids pick them up . A teaching moment that there are consequences for your actions .

I was that kid!!
our neighbors had me write letters of apologies as well. I have raked up leaves at peoples houses, and paid my dues. you did right Tb!! and so did the mom. |

I am not remembering this story perfectly:
In about 1968, my grandparents moved from Kansas City to one of those NYC commuter towns in Connecticut for my granddad's job. At the time, my grandmother had a red '65 Mustang convertible. Growing up in Missouri, she had never in her life locked her house doors, and whenever she drove somewhere and parked the car she simply left the keys in the ignition. So she continued doing this in CT. One day, a red Mustang convertible with the keys in the ignition proved to be too much temptation for a couple of teenage boys, who stole it and took it for a joyride. She had shopping in the back seat, which they tossed out of the car as they drove. They were quickly caught by the police. When they called her to tell her that they had recovered her car and the culprits, and asked if she wanted to press charges, she said there was no need...as long as they went back and found and collected from the side of the road everything they had thrown out of the car. After that, she began taking her keys with her. |
