Explain this one to me. I went to the hardware store yesterday to identify the thread pitch of a bolt and buy 20 of the bolts that I need for an engine rebuild. In the process of of this I THOUGHT that it would be nice to have one of those thread pitch identifier plaques in my garage so that I could just do it at home. Of course now today, I get ads for those on my phone. Someone explain this. I understand that if you talk about something this can happen, but it was only a thought.

Actually, I was using my home thread pitch gauge yesterday (7/8 x 14, fwiw) and I was thinking how nice it would be for everyone on this bbs to have one of these, so I sent good thoughts to the universe.

I wish I hadn't read this because I don't want a thread pitch gauge.

I just stop thinking when using my phone... so they get nuthin' :D

Geo-location is pretty accurate these days, but it doesn't need satellite inside the store.

It probably uses bluetooth to triangulate your phone to other phones and other known stationary devices for exact position, with time spent, where. Big stores do it but they don't tell you. And expect all to have facial recognition cameras. Do you have happy face? Frustrated face.

Maybe the hardware store sends their purchase info over the net to home base. Aggregate data over time. People in this location bought that. Or they took photos of the hardware isle which were geolocated. Paired with your data, the system knew you were not sure because of time spent in the bolt isle.

And your phone is used as a relay for other program pings such as 'find my phone' 'tinder' 'vocal commands' remote camera activation etc.
And that is why a giant smartphone battery lasts half a day without use..

You need your tin foil hat for that level of paranoia. They can't just log into your Bluetooth unless you agree. And Stores are not going to share purchase data unless someone is paying them large bucks. Find my phone is only good for people you share with.

WiFi or any enabled App using Bluetooth on your phone is constantly pinging. Those also have a registry sending address. Perhaps that address is on file to be looked up. They don't have to 'hack into' anything. The phone is constantly sending it out. They just have to listen. It's private property that the customer willingly entered.

Plus in the TOS/EULA fine print there is that language about sharing with partner affiliates.

Similar thing has happened to me more than once in the past few weeks!

Also - about the bolt/nut thread - pitch gauges such as above.
The issue to watch for is limited selection of common hardware sizes. For example in SAE, there's 24 tpi and 32 tpi for both #8 and #10 bolts - but on your example above - both are included on #10 only.
