SEOUL, Korea -- The X-ray picture shows a 5-centimeter nail stuck in an unidentified South Korean patient's skull Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004. According to a Seoul hospital, doctors found the nail after the man came to the hospital, complaining about a severe headache. They speculate that the nail stuck in the man's head four years ago in an accident but the man didn't know about it. The nail was removed in a surgery last Saturday. (12/07/04 AP photo)

****ET, Thailand -- A devotee to the Chinese Shrine of Jui Tui in ****et, Thailand, has his face pierced by a bicycle and helped by others as he takes part in the annual Vegetarian Festival. Ritual Vegetarianism in ****et traces it roots back to the early 1800's. The festival begins on the first evening of the ninth lunar month and lasts for nine days. Participants in the festival perform acts of body piercing as a means of shifting evil spirits from individuals onto themselves. (10/20/04 AP photo)

It really is mind-opening..

Right about the time the coring needle goes through, your mind opens up to the thought "G'damn this really HURTS!"

..and it can always get worse Isabo!

Thankfully my daughter, a motorcycle fanatic, gave up on the nose ring and lip ring after a friend of hers took a fall and the nose ring tore through the nostril and was pushed up the nasal passage. Piercings around the mouth often end up damaging teeth, so thankfully that went as well.
A good beating? She's 25, stands six inches taller than me, goes to the gym three times a week and is a blackbelt in some martial art or other. No Chance!
Joking aside, except for my not being able to come to terms with her tattoos and piercings she's a perfect daughter. Occaisionally I even manage to get her out of her motorcycle leathers or overalls into more ladylike attire Some of her friends are much more extreme than my Valeria but they're good kids too when you get to know them. They've educated me a lot on some of the more esoteric practices around - all part of the human experience I suppose.
I really wish she would settle down with her long time boyfriend: The odd couple - he's a lawyer in a suit

...when you get to know them.

To me, that phrase has always been on the same plane as "she's pretty smart, for a girl..."

I understand exactly what you mean!
What I meant was that I've learned not to judge by appearances.
My daughter's best friend has large gauge piercings (Really gross to my eye) and except for her face and ears is covered in tattoos of little stars, spaceships meteors - a walking constellationchart for the starship Enterprise. Much more discreet than it sounds as they mostly look like coloured freckles until one's very close. My first impression was not positive, however, she is one of nicest people I have ever known and someone that would be there to help whenever necessary. I do wish that she had a more conventional appearance though.
